history

In 1862 the first costume lending establishment Lambert Hofer was founded in Vienna by Lambert Hofer I (1830-1897). Lambert Hofer I was initially employed as a costume tailor at the Vienna Burgtheater from May 4, 1854 . After a dispute with the actor Karl Wilhelm Meixner , he left the Burgtheater and founded Austria's first costume rental company.

The beginnings consisted mainly in tailoring so-called repertoire costumes and lending them to actors. Over the years, entire theater sets were made and lent out. This laid the foundation for what is now more than 110,000 costumes, including 25,000 uniforms .

From the beginnings of the film industry and television history, the Lambert Hofer company , which has since been further developed by Lambert Hofer II (1879–1938) and Lambert Hofer III (1907–1997), was represented in these with costume outfits. For example, the actors in the films Prince and Beggar Boy (1920), The Fool's Cap of Love (1921), The Tragedy of a Missing Prince's Son (1922), The Unknown Tomorrow (1923) and The Arsonists of Europe (1926) were in costumes from the house Lambert Hofer can be seen on the screen. The Viennese costume rental company was also responsible for furnishing the Viennese magic sounds produced in 1931 . Countless costumes, such as Romy Schneider's clothes and Karlheinz Böhm's coronation gown from the Sissi films, are now stored in Lambert Hofer's halls in Vienna. The tuxedo for James Bond actor Timothy Dalton and the costumes for Brad Pitt for the film Seven Years in Tibet were also made by Lambert Hofer. The films The Pianist , Balzac - A Life Full of Passion and The Wandering Whore were also provided by the Viennese costume rental company.
