Karl Wilhelm Meixner , also Carl Meixner (born November 16, 1815 in Königsberg , East Prussia , † September 5, 1888 in Vienna ) was a German actor.

Life

Meixner was the son of bassist Heinrich Meixner. He began his acting career in 1837 at a touring stage in Lüneburg , from where he came to Hamburg in 1839 via the court theater in Detmold . Further stations were Leipzig in 1844 and Stuttgart in 1847 . After a guest performance at the Vienna Burgtheater in 1850, he became a royal court actor a year later and was part of the ensemble for the rest of his life. Meixner died in an asylum in 1888.

An oil portrait of Meixner in the role of Vanssen in Goethe's Egmont by Josef Fux is in the Burgtheatergalerie. In 1930 Meixnerweg in Vienna- Meidling was named after the actor.

Karl Wilhelm Meixner was one of the most important character comedians of his time. He played over 300 roles, the most important of which were Shakespearean characters and the village judge Adam in Kleist's The Broken Jug . His unusual versatility was particularly appreciated.
