Jana Karen

Jana Karen (born October 4, 1958 in Czechoslovakia ) is a Czech-German film architect and production designer .

Live and act

Jana Karen came to the Federal Republic of Germany quite early and received her artistic training at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich . She completed her studies in stage design and costume there in 1980 with a diploma. Karen continued to live in the Bavarian capital and in the same decade began to design the buildings for television productions as a set designer. Her specialty was studio construction as well as dramatic material with a historical background: In her oeuvre there are numerous television films that cover the 12th ( The Secret of the Midwife ), the 16th ( The Heretic's Bride ), the 18th ( The Midwife ), the 19th ( Die Midwife 2, Das goldene Ufer, Die Glasbläserin ) and the 20th century (the movie Sophie Scholl - The Last Days ) evoked. Her work on the latter film earned Karen a 2005 European Film Award nomination .

In addition to her work for film and television, Jana Karen has often designed the buildings for stage productions. Her important work in this sector includes Peter Beauvais ' staging of Die lustigen Weiber von Windsor at the Munich State Opera and at the Theater in der Josefstadt (Vienna), where she was active between 1986 and 1996, the plays Die von Nebenan in a production by Otto Schenk , Regina Madre by Erwin Steinhauer and Pension Schöller . Since the end of communism in her Czech homeland, Jana Karen has gradually moved the center of her life from Munich to Prague.

For The Great Rudolph , she and Martina Müller were awarded the German Television Prize 2019 in the Best Equipment category.
