action

The film is set in Saxony at the end of the 12th century. The healer Marthe has medical and visionary abilities. Her mother was drowned as a witch and she was also threatened with death after failing to help a noblewoman's pregnant wife. She joins Franconian settlers who find a new home with the Margrave of Meißen. The leader is the knight Christian, who develops a love affair with Marthe in the course of the plot. However, she previously married the villager Wiprecht, who, however, fell victim to the dispute between Randolf and Christian towards the end of the film. Next to the village, the action takes place at the castle of the Margrave of Meißen, in which the Margravine Hedwig and Randolf, who was ousted by Knight Christian as the army leader of the Margrave against Henry the Lion and is his bitter enemy, spin intrigues. Marthe is hired by Hedwig to heal her ailing son. After silver has been discovered in the village, the villagers work in the mining industry under the direction of Christian. When Randolf, as Vogt, is also charged with monitoring the mining in the neighborhood, disputes arise. When Christian is absent, Randolf has two villagers whipped and provokes a duel with Christian after Christian's return. He also tries to drown Marthe. Randolf's plan goes wrong and he is sentenced by the margrave to a pilgrimage to the Holy Land. In the end Marthe and Christian marry with the approval of the margrave and Christian receives a hereditary fief.
