Disney's Adventures of the Gummi Bears (AKA Disney's Adventures of the Gummi Bears ) is a US-based Disney - animated series , which was produced from 1985 to 1991. In 1988, Das Erste broadcast the series for the first time in Germany. The original title song Bouncing here and there and everywhere (in German: Hopping here and there and everywhere ) was composed by Patty Silversher, sung by Joseph Williams and translated into over ten different languages. The series consists of six seasons with a total of 65 episodes each 22 minutes long with a total of 94 individual stories. This is Disney's gummy bear gang the Disney series with the most seasons produced, albeit not with the most episodes.

action

The series is about six gummy bears , in a medieval -style fairy tale world as descendants of the Great gummy bears in the underground Gummibären settlement Gummibärental live in the forest of Dunwyn. The gummy bears are generally considered a legend by the people , only a few know of their true existence. Long ago the gummy bears had a powerful and well-developed civilization , but they were persecuted by the armies of the people who wanted to gain access to the knowledge of the former high culture of the great gummy bears and ultimately drove almost all the gummy bears north. During the adventures of the gummy bears from the gummy bear valley, old ruins and intact structures with partly high-tech equipment are found again and again. Most of the gummy bears settled on it on a continent unknown to man and became legend over time. The greatest wish of the gummy bears from the gummy bear valley is to finally get to know the big gummy bears.

Despite their efforts to continue to live apart from humans, the Gummy Bear Valley bears gradually encounter several people, and despite all fears, the first encounters do not always result in confrontation and fight, although this becomes inevitable at times as the series progresses . The gummy bears' closest human friends are Princess Calla, daughter of King Gregory and heir to the throne of Dunwyn, and Cavin, page of Gregory's chief knight, Sir Tuxford.

The gummy bears owe their name to a magic potion that makes them bounce like a rubber ball . This potion is made by Grammi according to an old, secret recipe from the gum berries that grow in the forest of Dunwyn. The gummy berry juice gives a person and Igzorn's monsters ( ogres ) superhuman strength for a short time (however, unlike gummy bears, it only works once a day for humans). Duke Igzorn tries constantly with his submissive and by him tyrannized servant Toadwart (Toadie) and other rather simple-minded monsters to get the formula of the potion and the remaining secrets of the gummy bears in order to conquer Dunwyn and to establish a reign of terror. Often times the gummy bears have to intervene - albeit secretly - to protect the king, their friends and their secrets from the intrigues of Igzorn and other enemies.

characters

Gummy bears

The six gummy bears from the gummy bear valley:

  • Cubbi ( [ˈkʌbi] ) - the smallest and youngest of the gummy bears who absolutely wants to become a knight. He is always on the lookout for adventures that he wants to endure with his best friend Cavin. Apart from that, he also likes to play pranks. Cubbi often imagines himself to be a knight fighting monsters and dragons in his fantasy. It is not uncommon for his childish gimmicks to cause problems or destruction (for example, “old, venerable” gummy bear knight statues fall over). Sometimes he takes on the role of his alter ego , the Scarlet Avenger . He has a pink coat. His name Cubbi comes from the English word " cub ", which means "young animal" and in this case "bear cub" and is an allusion to the fact that he is the youngest of the group.
  • Grammi - the housemother in Gummy Glen; she takes care of the other gummy bears in a motherly manner, prepares the gummy bear drink and often argues with Gruffi. It has a light brown to orange fur. She is the only she-bear who knows "the secret of gummy bear juice" and who passes the recipe on to Sunni over the course of the series. Her name comes from the English word " granny ", a short form of the endearing word " grandma " (short for " grandmother " - in German: "grandmother"), which means "grandma" and is an allusion to her "grandmotherly" position within the group .
  • Gruffi - a rather grumpy, stubborn, practical and rather traditionally oriented contemporary. He is the engineer of the gummy bears and the counterpart to the academic-theoretical Zummi. With Grammi, he often fights verbal and physical fights, but under the rough fur there is a caring and helpful gummy bear. Even if the other residents of Gummi Glenn often describe him as "too rough", they know that in the end he only cares about his friends. In some situations even his “soft” side breaks through, so you can also see him mourn allegedly lost friends. He has a brown fur. Gruffi's name comes from the English word “ gruff ” which means “rough (-legged)”, “rough”, “sullen” or grouchy and thus describes Gruffi's most prominent character trait.
  • Sunni ( [ˈsʌni] ) - the maturing gummy bear girl would rather be a princess like her best friend Calla. She has a yellow fur. Often she persuades Gruffi with her innocent charm to overlook certain things or to allow them. Her name comes from the English word " sunny ", which is a term for a "sunny mind" and thus describes her always cheerful character.
  • Thummi ( [ˈtʌmi] ) - Thummi is slow, melancholy, big and fat. He has a dark blue fur and likes to nibble and has a weakness for the dishes and cookies made by Grammi, but also has remarkable (albeit mostly hidden) manual skills and a good grasp of things. Most of the time, he is impartial in disputes or acts as an arbitrator. He has several hobbies - for example, he is an enthusiastic shipbuilder in a bottle, who uses his manual skills in a filigree and surprisingly patient manner, which one normally does not trust him, and he also collects models of ships that he has set up in his room and regularly cleans. He also maintains a tomato garden. Its name comes from the English word " tummy ", a belittling term for belly, comparable to the German terms tummy or belly.
  • Zummi ( [ˈzʌmi] ) - the magician of the gummy bears, who needs the so-called Big Book of the gummy bears for his information . A tall magical hat adorns the head of the bear, who is in possession of a gummy bear medal. He is more of a patient, ambitious, but sometimes clichéd, confused academic who, unlike Gruffi, tries to solve theoretical problems and therefore often clashes with him. Sometimes he overestimates his magic abilities, but in emergency situations they usually work, even if often not quite according to plan. His trademarks are failing spells and constant slip of the tongue ( spoonerisms ). Together with Gruffi, he tries to preserve and further develop the scientific legacy of the giant gummy bears. Its fur is gray-purple. He's also afraid of heights .

More gummy bears:

  • Gusto (short for Augusto ; only from season 2) - An artist who lives with a toucan called Artie Deco . He is a very changeable and self-critical artist who tries to express his taste with increasingly unusual styles. He was rescued by Gruffi and Tummi from a volcanic island on which he had been stuck for twelve years, and although he prefers to live alone, he often visits the other gummy bears in Gummi Glen. He often gives the other gummy bears pseudo-Italian nicknames (eg "Gruffomundo"). Again and again he tries to get Gruffi to see things a little more loosely, which he only partially succeeds in. The name Artie Deco is a swipe at the Art Deco architectural style , which in turn fits Gusto's personality.
  • Sir Thornberry - A clumsy old gummy bear knight who would never be seen to be one of the "Big Gummy Bears". He is the caretaker of the old gummy bear capital Ursalia. It is particularly noticeable with this bear that 50 years of loneliness have left their mark. But even if Sir Thornberry can sometimes seem confused, an experienced knight and adventurer rests in this gummy bear, which is revealed to the other gummy bears in many dangerous situations.
  • The Barbigans ( Barbics in English) are a group of more primitive and combative gummy bears that have been driven from their native forest by humans and have found refuge in Ursalia under Thornberry's supervision. Their tribal name is an allusion to the term " barbarian ", especially when used in the fantasy genre. Its most prominent members include:
    • Ursa - A rowdy gummy bear woman and the leader of the barbigans. Although initially hostile to humans, the Gummy Glen Bears and Cavin manage to convince them that not all humans are their enemies. Her name is Latin and means "she-bear".
    • Buddi - A teenage Barbigan who develops a friendship with Cubbi, Sunni and Cavin when they meet in Buddi's new home, Ursalia. Its name comes from the English word " buddy ", which means "Kumpel" or "Freund" in German.
    • Gritty - A coarse Barbigan and Ursa's deputy, with an eye patch, but a friendly, rough disposition. Its name comes from the English phrase " to grit one's teeth ", which means " to bite your teeth" or " to grit your teeth " in German and alludes to its combative character.
  • Chummi - A gummy bear and captain of his own airship. He arrives in his flying ship in the gummy bear forest in order - as the only survivor of his colony - to be able to live with gummy bears again. When he learns that Gummi Glen is almost deserted, he tries to cross the ocean to find the "Big Gummy Bears". Cubbi wants to go with him, but at the last moment decides to stay in Gummy Glen.

People and other characters

Dunwyn Castle

  • Cavin - Sir Tuxford's page. He is the first person to come into contact with the gummy bears and becomes a good friend and confidante to them. In the first episode he brought them the gummy bear medal, which made it possible for the gummy bears to use their big book again. He has a particular weakness for Princess Calla. His best friend is Cubbi, with whom he often travels, fights with the monsters and just as he wants to become a great knight .
  • Princess Calla - The daughter and only child of the king. She cannot necessarily adapt to the life of a princess (or the duties and court etiquette), even if she often uses her title to assert herself. She got to know the gummy bears after she was kidnapped by Igzorn and locked in a cell with Sunni, who magically assumed the shape of the princess. Calla and Sunni are very close friends, and she is especially fond of Cavin.
  • King Gregory - The wise and benevolent King of the Kingdom of Dunwyn and the father of Princess Calla. Although his throne and his life are often saved by the gummy bears, he and most of his subjects are ignorant of their existence.
  • Sir Tuxford - The general and old friend of the king. A contentious person, even if at heart a good-natured and brave man. Sir Tuxford is famous and infamous in the Kingdom of Dunwyn for his stories of heroic days gone by. Many people smile at him or laugh at him. But some listen to him eagerly and sometimes even believe him (including his page Cavin, for example).
  • Unwin - An older boy and, like Cavin, a squire at Dunwyn Castle. He likes to push Cavin around and always tries to secure the princess's favor; however, he is nothing more than a loud-mouthed hare's foot, who prefers to save his own skin when there is real danger.
  • Sir Gowan ( Sir Gawain ) - Cavin's grandfather and original finder of the gummy bear medal who never misses an opportunity to enthusiastically tell people his gummy bear stories. Later gets to know the gummy bears personally, but without finding out that Cavin is also friends with them.
  • Sir Victor Igzorn ( Sir Victor Igthorn ), also known as the White Knight , is a paladin in the Dunwyn Empire. He is also Duke Igzorn's twin brother , a past he is ashamed of and which drove him to embark on the path of the heroic knight. He has the ability to let the women sink in rows at his feet by kissing the hand.

Drekmoor Castle

  • Herzog Sigmund Igzorn ( Duke Sigmund Igthorn ) - The evil, irascible, vengeful and power-hungry ruler of Drekmoor, who hunts the gummy bears with the help of his monsters to get the gummy bear juice and its other secrets. His attempts to conquer Dunwyn typically fail because of the overestimation of his tactical skills, the stupidity of his monsters and the intervention of the gummy bears. He is constantly called "Iggilein" by his servants (to his great annoyance). Allegedly, he was once the best knight to serve under King Gregory, but was banished from Dunwyn after an act of betrayal. Igzorn has a great passion for Lady Bane, which she does not reciprocate.
  • Toadie (actual name: "Toadwart") - Duke Igzorn's right hand. He differs from the other monsters by his relatively high intelligence and his dwarfish size. He is constantly being pushed around by his master and his fellow dogs, but tries to keep himself on the good side of his master by constant flattery. He recognizes and sees through the greed and lust for domination of his ruler and the problems associated with it through ill-conceived actions to conquer the kingdom of Dunwin.
  • Monsters (English ogres - monsters, ogres ) - the monsters are clumsy and simple-minded, but very strong creatures and the servants of Duke Igzorn. With their stupid manner, they often bring the duke's "ingenious" plans to failure, which always drives him crazy and on the verge of despair.
    • Zook is a tall, green-skinned monster with orange hair.
    • Gad is a large purple-colored monster who often works with Zook.

Others

  • Lady Bane - A powerful and evil sorceress who goes after the magic of the gummy bears. Like Zummi, she has a gummy bear medal. She is as vain as she is cunning and tries to change and rule the world according to her own ideas using gummy magic. She is tall and wears a wine-red robe that covers her legs like a skirt.
  • Troggles - The servants of Lady Bane. These jackal-like creatures hardly speak and only repeat the last words Lady Bane gives them as an order.
  • Kobolds (English trolls - trolls ) - A trio of thieves who often cause trouble in Dunwyn and the gummy bears.
  • Carpies - Carpies are vulture- like creatures that live in high mountains, the Carpieberg . Sunni Gummi was abducted by them twice - once to serve as a songbird for their tyrannical king, the second time when she was accidentally considered their new queen by the other Carpies. The title of king finally went to the clumsy but good-natured Bodo .

Trivia

  • In episode 2 "The Wizard" you can see the silhouettes of the Disney characters Donald Duck and Mickey Mouse when the deceitful sculptor Davini stows a freshly petrified rabbit in his car.
  • In the second part of the second episode "Zummi's Magic Land", Zummi Cavin explains that gummy bear juice only works once a day for people. In the first episode, the potion works for Cavin the second time.
  • Episode 15, "The Bounty Hunter," features a taciturn, grim bounty hunter named Flint Shrubwood . He is hired by Igzorn to catch a gummy bear, but cheated of his wages, whereupon he seeks revenge. This bounty hunter pays homage to popular actor Clint Eastwood in terms of appearance and facial expressions, especially his role in the dollar trilogy . In the German version, the character is appropriately voiced by Klaus Kindler , Eastwood's long-time regular voice actor, who also used some of the English film quotes used by Eastwood, such as “ Make my day! “( Dirty Harry ) says.
  • In the German dubbing, some names change over the course of the episodes. So it is initially called "Gummibärental", which later changes to its original English name "Gummi Glen". The "goblins" are also referred to as "trolls" in the course of the episodes, which is particularly noticeable after a goblin (an Irish leprechaun ) appears in an episode.
  • King Gregory is titled differently in the course of the series and often even within an episode. Knights and subjects alternate between the forms of address “Highness”, “Royal Highness” and “Majesty”. As a king, only the latter title is appropriate; Highness means duke. Thus would Duke Igzorn with "sovereignty" always King Gregor Majesty to speak.
  • In the German version, Gruffi says in episode 21 that he is a decent person .
  • Although the gummy bears in the gummy bear valley live together in a kind of family association , actual relationships have never been confirmed. This also prompted Robot Chicken to parody the series.
  • In the Darkwing Duck episode "Lord Fiesoduck's sinister realm", Darkwing Duck travels to the Kontra-Universe (the home of Fiesoduck), where the local counterpart to Quack the Bruchpilot steals toys for the local Kiki and one of those toys is a stuffed animal, the Zummi very similar.
  • In the 2017 new edition of the DuckTales there is an old document in the episode The Secret Files of Agent 22 , on which an alchemical recipe for a drink made from berries is printed, which enables you to "here and there and everywhere" by ingesting it leap. In the drawing of a forest on the same document, the gummy bears can also be seen as silhouettes.
