Darkwing Duck is an animated series produced by the Walt Disney Company from 1991 to 1992 with the main character of the same name. The series consists of 91 episodes, which were first broadcast in Germany by Das Erste . The series was in Germany a. a. at Super RTL and kabel eins broadcast several times.

History of origin

The series was created as a short-term replacement for Disney's plan to reissue the 1959-1964 broadcast The Rocky and Bullwinkle Show . Shortly after the start of production, Disney noticed that the company only owned the rights to VHS marketing, not the characters and locations.

Based on the work of the Cuban-American Disney illustrator Michael Perazas , inventor of (among other things) series like TaleSpin and Goofy and Max , the series was created as a spin-off of the highly successful animated series DuckTales , also a Creation of Perazas. In episode 48, A Bruchpilot plays 007 , Quack, who later becomes a sidekick in Darkwing Duck , becomes a super agent. Quack was to be the main character in the series Double-O-Duck (original title of the episode). When it turned out that the license rights relating to James Bond , the rights of which was owned by the Californian Danjaq Holding , stood in the way of publication under the title, the idea from another DuckTales episode was consulted instead . As a result 92, the masked Drake (The Masked Mallard), slips Scrooge McDuck in a purple cape to the crime in anonymity Entenhausen fight. The Disney draftsman Tad Stones then designed the character of the Darkwing Duck and appointed a redesigned version of the Bruchpilot Quack to be the sidekick of the series. The name of the episode became the nickname of the main character Eddie Erpel. In reference to the previous history of the series, Eddie Erpel suggests in episode 48, Quack or Duck , that is the question , to call himself "Double-O-Duck" from now on and Quack describes this idea as ridiculous.

Although characters from DuckTales are represented in the series with Bruchpilot Quack and the noisy duck and episode 72, Eisenbeiß is planning a big thing , reference is made to Dagobert Duck, DuckTales and Darkwing Duck, according to Tad Stone, play in alternative universes . Quack was the first Disney animated television character to appear in two different animated series from the studio.

A planned spin-off called Justice Ducks, in which Darkwing Duck and the Noise-Boom Duck should have appeared in the company of other superheroes, never went beyond early project drafts .

content

Darkwing Duck is a superhero who tries to protect his hometown Sankt Erpelsburg (St. Canard) from crime. In contrast to superheroes like Batman or Spider-Man , however, he is often rather clumsy. His problem: He hunts criminals not only to protect the city, but for fame and honor. In some cases he even endangers the missions with sometimes long speeches in the third person and superfluous dramaturgy . His clumsiness makes him do a lot wrong and, thanks to his large ego , he is seldom willing to accept help. Unlike Inspector Gadget and similar cartoon heroes , who are more caricatures than true superheroes, Darkwing is ultimately always able to triumph over evil, even if he often depends on the help of his friends.

What is striking about his person, in addition to his purple outfit, are his metaphor-laden speech and the imaginative announcements of himself (for example, "I am the chewing gum that sticks under the sole of your shoe." Or "I am the loose screw in your criminal brain."). His motto “Two, One, Risk!” (Eng. “Let's get dangerous!”) He often gives the best, mostly as a prelude to a daring action. His all-purpose pistol, which can also shoot climbing ropes and nets, is also helpful. It also fires the smoke cartridges, which Darkwing uses to quickly bring himself and his allies out of danger or to put opponents out of action (which Darkwing often announces with "Sniff gas, villain!"). But even in unarmed combat, it should not be underestimated. Darkwing uses a variation of a martial art called Quack Fu , which he learned from his old mentor Gans Lee (originally Goose Lee) in the Far East .

As Eddie Erpel (originally Drake Mallard ) he lives a normal life in St. Erpelsburg. Only his adopted daughter Kiki, his pilot Quack and Kiki's next-door son and friend, Alfred Wirrfuß, know his true identity.

characters

Darkwings team

  • Kiki Erpel born Zündelmeyer ( Gosalyn Mallard / Waddlemeyer ) is Darkwing's adopted daughter. Although she is never actually allowed to go on the hunt for criminals, the peasant-smart and spoiled brat is always there to help. She is included in the pilot episode of Darkwing after her grandfather (Prof. Zündelmeyer / Waddlemeyer) was murdered by Torro Bulba's henchmen.
  • Quack ( Launchpad McQuack ), the break pilot, can fly the Thunder Quack (but rarely land safely) and is otherwise the man for everything. The figure originally comes from the DuckTales series . He's a big fan of Darkwing Duck and built the Donnerquack himself.
  • Alfred Wirrfuß ( Honker Muddlefoot ), the shy neighbor son and best friend of Kiki, is extremely intelligent and very well read. It forms the sensible counterpoint to the lively Kiki.

The ducks of justice

  • Dingsbums Duck ( Gizmo Duck ) comes from time to time from Duckburg to St. Petersburg drake to support the local police and also Darkwing against crime. He and Darkwing can't stand each other and are constantly trying to outdo each other. They also know each other in normal life, but do not know anything about each other's secret identity. Like Quack, he has already had a role in the cartoon series DuckTales . Since Darkwing Duck appeared in Germany before the second season of DuckTales , he was named "Krach-Bumm-Ente" in DuckTales . Gizmoduck's secret identity is Otto Frühauf (in the English version as well as in "DuckTales": Fenton Crackshell ).
  • Morgana Macaber ( Morgana Macawber ) is Darkwing's great love. She has a criminal past and while this and her strange relatives make her not easy to deal with, with Darkwing's help, she overcame these problems for the most part. Even so, she sometimes finds it difficult to resist temptation. She has powerful magical powers, but they are rarely helpful in the fight against crime, as what is supposed to happen rarely happens. Her tame spider Archibald (English Archie) and her tame bats Schnatter and Flatter (English Eek and Squeak ) support her in every project. The character is based on Morticia from the Addams Family .
  • Stegmann ( Steggmutt ), his nickname is "Stegi", is a former museum attendant who was turned into an upright walking stegosaurus by the crazy Professor Fossil - which made his strength grow enormously and his brain shrunk enormously. Since he was rescued by Darkwing from the clutches of Professor Fossil, he has been loyal to Darkwing - which, due to his lack of intelligence, is not always to the benefit of the drake.
  • Neptunia is a fish person. The sea pollution turned the fish into a mutant who declared war on humans. Purified by Darkwing, she and her tame squid joined the "Ducks of Justice" - although she repeatedly emphasizes that she is not a duck.

The terrible five

  • Fiesoduck ( Negaduck ) is Darkwing's evil doppelganger and at the same time leader of the terrible Five. He does not have superpowers, but more than compensates for this shortcoming with more rational and criminal behavior. His plans often fail more by chance than planned by Darkwing Duck. Fiesoduck also uses his resemblance to Darkwing Duck from time to time to harm his archenemy, to cast false suspicions on him and to deceive others. Fiesoduck is the ruler of the "contrauniverse" (which is also his secret hiding place). During the entire series it is never clear whether Fiesoduck has another identity like Darkwing and whether Fiesoduck knows that Darkwing is actually Eddie Erpel. Fiesoduck is the main antagonist of the series and on the one hand it is said that he was Darkwings' cousin, on the other hand it is said that he came from the Contraversum, a parallel world to Sankt Erpelsburg in which everything is reversed.
  • Megavolt rules electricity and can shoot lightning bolts from its fingertips. He was a classmate of Eddie Erpel's named Ottokar Funkenspotz ( Elmo Sputterspark ) before he involuntarily charged himself with too much static electricity during a self -experiment. Originally he wanted to call himself "Megawatt", but since this name was already taken, he spontaneously called himself "Megavolt". His passion is collecting lightbulbs; he is obsessed with the goal of freeing the world's electrical appliances from slavery. Occasionally he also works with Quackerjack and creates a complete mess. However, since it is almost always under current, it cannot tolerate water. Megavolt was inspired by the Spider-Man villain Electro , who also has an electrified body.
  • Professor Benjamin "Benni" Buxbaum ( Dr. Reginald Bushroot ) mutated into a duck-plant hybrid in a scientific self- experiment and now uses his connection with the plants to carry out criminal acts and to establish botanical world domination in the long term (and probably too to take revenge on humanity for the offenses suffered before its mutation). Most of the time, however, he is less interested in crime and more interested in making a true friend; it only becomes a real danger in the presence of the “Terrible Five”. His loyal companion is Hasso, a very agile carnivorous plant with very canid behavior. Buxbaum is based on the Batman villain Poison Ivy , which is characterized by its ability to control plants and to communicate with them.
  • The liquidator was once the chairman of a mineral water company called Knut Flut ( Bud Flood ). While trying to poison his competitors' mineral water with a special acid, Darkwing Duck accidentally pushed him into it. This scene is heavily based on a scene from the movie Batman , in which Jack Napier falls into an acid container and becomes the "joker". He was turned into a water creature (which, however, still speaks in very eloquent salesman jargon). He is practically invincible, the water and he are one - with all strengths and weaknesses. Also at his side are two saleswomen, who always appear in costumes. The Liquidator is based on the Hydro-Man , a form-changing opponent of Spider-Man.
  • Quackerjack is a completely crazy jester in court jester costume ("Time to play!"). He was once a toy manufacturer , but was driven out of business by video games, particularly Wiffle Boy, which drove him crazy. He especially impresses with explosive or other dangerous toys. He also seems to suffer from schizophrenia or a split personality , which he expresses through his doll "Master Banana Brains" ( Mr. Banana Brain ). In one episode he is forced to work with Darkwing to fight the ghost Mortadello . Quackerjack is loosely based on Batman's archenemy Joker and Superman's Toyman , both of which can also turn toys into dangerous weapons.

FOWL

  • Eisenbeiß ( Steelbeak ) is the top agent of the "Nasty Organization for Worldwide Rascals" (FOWL) and Darkwing is at least physically superior. But because of his arrogance, his vanity and the fact that he underestimates Darkwing again and again, his plans always fail. His henchmen are the yolk heads. FOWL itself is an organization whose leader is only recognizable as a shadow, but the upper boss looks almost like Binky Wirrfuß (Binky has a goose bill, the upper boss a duck bill). Eisenbeiß is a parody of the classic James Bond villain who prefers to leave his archenemy behind in a hopeless situation with a mostly absurd way of death, rather than killing him when he has the opportunity. In particular Eisenbeiß was inspired by the Bond villains Jaws ( Jaws ) from the films The Spy Who Loved Me and Moonraker - Top Secret , which had a steel teeth while Eisenbeiß (as anthropomorphic has Hahn) a beak of steel.
  • Salpetra Schniefschnabel ( Ammonia Pine ) is also an agent of FOWL. The former cleaning lady was originally a cleaner in a research laboratory until there was an accident with disinfectant and she inhaled toxic fumes. Since then, Salpetra has suffered from an obsession with cleaning. Her sister Gloria Glibbrich ( Ample Grime ), who also works for FOWL, on the other hand, is a notorious filth, which doesn't necessarily make the work together any easier. Salpetra also has a weakness for her colleague Agent Eisenbeiß, who does not reciprocate her feelings.

Other villains

  • Tuskerninni is a criminal director who always has his deeds filmed and is accompanied by three silent penguins - as a kind of film crew . His name is an allusion to the Italian conductor Toscanini ; Tusk is English for tusk, an indication that he is a walrus .
  • Klatu, Barata and Niktu (English Flarg, Barada and Nikto ) are criminals from space and look just like normal hats with the exception of their eyes and their legs, which are equipped with suction cups. Whoever puts them on gets into their mind control. They are extremely sensitive to pepper. Her greatest enemy is Alfred Wirrfuß, who was able to outsmart and eliminate her twice - which is why he is celebrated as a hero on the home planet of the hats. The names of the extraterrestrial brain parasites originally come from the B-movie The Day on which the Earth Stood Still , in which an extraterrestrial keeps giving a robot the command “Klaatu Barada Nikto” .
  • Torro Bulba (Taurus Bulba) is a mafia boss who wanted to rule St. Erpelsburg. He murdered Kiki's grandfather and then wanted to kidnap Kiki, believing that she had a code for a super weapon. He is Darkwing Duck's first major opponent. Although he apparently died in an explosion, FOWL was able to bring him back to life as a cyborg - a nod to the fact that villains in comics keep coming back to life in weirdest ways when they should be dead by now . His name is derived from the fictional character Taras Bulba . His first name is an allusion to "Toro" - bull in Spanish, he has this shape. His assistants are thunder horn, mouth and claw.
  • Professor Moliarty is a brilliant mad scientist and commands the realm of moles, as he is himself. It is based on the fictional character of Prof. Moriarty .
  • Abstrusa Abstracta (English Splatter Phoenix , also called Lautrec in German ) is a completely crazy artist whose works no one wanted to buy, which is why she decided to become a criminal. She has developed a miracle brush with which she can bring drawings to life and hide herself in paintings.
  • Jambalaya Jambo (English Jambalaya Jake ) is a backwoods creature who travels to Sankt Erpelsburg with his crocodile Gumbo, who is at least tame to him, in order to make big money there.
  • Beelzebub is the devil and lord of hell. He is the archenemy of the Makaber family and disguised himself as the caretaker of the Hocus-Pocus Academy to set a trap for Darkwing.

Other characters

  • The Wirrfuß ( Muddlefoot ) family are Darkwing's hated neighbors and represent a critical allusion to the average American family. The family consists of father Herb, mother Binky and the sons Herb junior (English Tank ) and Alfred. While the parents are basically naive but personable (they never notice that Darkwing despises them), Alfred is intelligent and Herb junior is an aggressive, rebellious snot.
  • Director Julius Ganter ( Dr. J. Gander ) is the head of the anti-crime organization SHUSH, for which Darkwing occasionally fulfills assignments as a freelancer.
  • Agent Grizzlikoff (English: Vladimir Godunov Gryzlikoff ) is SHUSH chief agent and the right-hand man of Director Ganter. The grumpy Russian lawyer loathes Darkwing's unconventional crime-fighting methods.
  • Flitzbogen-Quack (English Quiverwing Quack ) is Kiki's superhero alter ego , as she - much to the chagrin of her adoptive father Darkwing - tries to fight villains with a bow, arrow and the help of her assistant "Reddish Arrow / Arrowkid " (Alfred). Both characters are allusions to the DC Comics - heroes Green Arrow or its companion Red Arrow. Sometimes Kiki is also known as the “Scarlet Quackine”.

Jim Cummings called the speaking role of the Darkwing Duck his favorite work. He justified this with the high degree of ad-lib , the fact that large parts of his role can be freely voiced.
