When The Columbus Butterfly and Other Adventures appeared as the first funny paperback in German magazine stores on October 1, 1967 , there was already Mickey Mouse , which had been distributing the stories of Donald Duck and Co. in booklet form since 1951, as well as other Disney comic books. In Italy there were already similar publications with Topolino and I Classici di Walt Disney ; serialized stories with Mickey Mouse appeared in the Sunday supplements of American newspapers from the 1930s to the 1950s.

The "Ehapa" publishing house at that time attempted to tap into the Italian market with the publication of the first funny paperback, where paperback Disney comics had long had good sales figures. At that time, the length of the stories was always tied to the size of the booklet; the funny paperback now offered the opportunity to tell longer stories. An enormous production developed in Italy, where at one point half of all comics written and drawn in Europe were created.

With the arrival of longer stories, the tradition of old adventure stories of cartoonist Floyd Gottfredson , who had shaped this genre in the 1930s, was continued. Typical of the first books (up to volume 79) is a prehistory that precedes the longer stories. In these first publications, the main stories are usually linked by interim episodes. With a few exceptions, each of these books can either be completely assigned to the Mickey Mouse universe or the Donald Duck universe. Since volume 80, the stories stand side by side and are sometimes no longer tied to one universe within a volume.

The format of the comics is written in so-called three-row rows - there are three strips on each page, unless larger or smaller images are used, which is more often the case in the younger volumes than before. Since 1987 (issue 119) the volumes have been completely colored, whereas previously only every second double page was printed in color.

Up to issue 166 the funny paperbacks were printed in Italy by Mondadori-Verlag. Since issue 167 (1992) they have been produced by GGP-Media in Pößneck , Thuringia .

The prices for the Funny Paperback have increased over the years. The first edition of the funny paperback, Der Columbusfalter , cost 2.50 DM in 1967, in 2011 the price was 5.50 €, in Austria 5.70 €.

The mode of publication changed several times. The editions up to 1974 appeared four to five times a year, 1975 and 1976 six times each, from 1980 to 1983 seven times and from 1984 to 1989 eight times a year, with the numbers 119 and 120 appearing on the same day in 1987. From 1990 to 1995, 13 and 12 volumes were alternately published annually. The Funny Paperback has been published 13 times a year since 1996, always on a Tuesday every four weeks.

Unlike the comic books of the publishing house The Merry paperback books are not in remission and later found even months in appropriate stands in magazine shelves.

The 500th volume was published on November 7, 2017. The anniversary edition has a special feature: it can be read from the front and back.

Content

Basics

The comics contain stories of the residents of Duckburg - especially Donald Duck and Mickey Mouse - which are made by a wide variety of artists. Due to the Italian model, they mostly came from Italy at first , later stories from Scandinavia were also added. It is noticeable that there were almost no deaths at all, at most earlier events of this kind are mentioned. Only in a few issues, such as the first volume ("The Columbus Butterfly"), in which Donald takes a journey through time, is the death of Uncle Scrooge a theme. Among other things, deaths caused by inheritance or the like become the focus of the action.

Also noteworthy is the extensive lack of first-degree family relationships. Rather, the protagonists are almost exclusively cousins and uncles and nephews or aunts and nieces. Occasionally there are siblings (especially Tick, Trick and Track) and grandparents (Grandma Duck), but practically no parent-child relationships.

Parodies

Many of the stories in the Funny Pocket Books allude to templates from literature, film, music and history. In Volume 16, Donald Baba satirized the story Ali Baba from the Arabian Nights and The Journey Around the World in 8 Days Jules Verne Around the World in 80 Days , in Volume 17, Micky and Minni , Minni Micky told the novel Der Kurier des on the phone Tsars of Jules Verne, in the first story of volume 58 Donald finds himself as William Shakespeare's Hamlet , whereas in the second story he parodies the heroic poem Cantar de Mio Cid as El Cid Pampeador . In volume 117, Die Ducks parodies … Gone with the Wind, the southern romance Gone with the Wind . Volume 506 contains a crime scene story.

Literary allusions are also found for example Tarzan ( Tarzonald , Volume 141), The Adventures of Tom Sawyer ( The Adventures of Mick Sawyer , Volume 153), Les Misérables ( The Secret of the Silver Candlesticks , Volume 143), The Foucault Pendulum ( The Pendulum of Ekol , Volume 166), The Odyssey of Odysseus ( Controversy about Odysseus , Volume 224), Moby Dick ( Moby Duck , Volume 467), Die Schatzinsel ( Die Schatzinsel Volume 491), Frankenstein (Duckenstein Volume 512), The Neverending Story ( Adventure in Comic Land , Volume 186), The Ring of the Nibelung ( Reingold , Volume 66, The Magic Ring , Volume 148), Campaigns and Adventures of Baron von Münchhausen ( Baron Donald von Münchhausen , Volume 66), War and Peace ( War and Peace , Volume 122 ), Dracula ( Graf Phantula , Volume 434) or the works of Italian literature of the Renaissance and the late Middle Ages ( Das Güldene Fass , Volume 137), of which the epic Der Rasende Roland by Ludovico Ariosto is a separate B. was worked on in the Drachenland trilogy ( Drachengold , Volume 197, Der Ritter ohne Furcht und Adel , Volume 203, and Der Geist aus der Kanne , Volume 226).

There are film parodies, for example, on Star Wars ( The All Master Saves the World in Volume 164, Clash of the Galaxies in Volume 168 and Die Weltraumritter in Volume 338) and Indiana Jones (Phantomias in Volume 121 and Indiana Goof in all of his appearances). Famous scenes from Hitchcock classics are also parodied: Vertigo , Psycho , The Window to the Courtyard , The Birds and Above the Roofs of Nice (Die Schreckens-Kur, Volume 234). Carmen ( Carmen olé ) and Aida ( Holde Aida , both in volume 88) have already been parodied from the music . The Star Top series, which is a parody of the cult series Star Trek and also celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2017, was printed in LTB Galaxy. In LTB 513 a treatise of the silent film classic and first film, the world document heritage was printed by Fritz Lang, Metropolis.

These parodies are of various kinds. An example using three different adaptations of the Lord of the Rings :

  • The Glass Sword (Volume 124) is a very free, thoroughly serious retelling with Micky and Goofy in the leading roles; the three sequels of the story (part 2 and 3 also LTB 124, part 4 LTB Christmas stories 1; all four parts in the anthology LTB Fantasy 2) are no longer based on the novel. It is an adaptation of the template.
  • In The Lord of the blade (Band 319) is about the eponymous television series that a clear parody of the film is the book. A humorous character prevails; However, it is less the film series itself than the way it is used that is parodied. The template is the history involved .
  • The great journey (Volume 448) and the sequel March through Middle World (Volume 461) are, however, real parodies of the original. The story is very parodic and retold with many allusions and comments, with Donald and Micky playing the main roles.

other topics

Historical topics are also often taken up, including the Huguenot Wars ( The King's Message in Volume 84), the French Revolution , the discovery of America by Christopher Columbus and the siege of Troy . With regard to historical topics, there is a separate series of stories (not only appearing in the LTB) in which Micky and Goofy travel into history using a secret time machine that is in the Entenhausen Museum, often on behalf of Prof. Zapotek and Marlin, who the Belongs to the time machine. Between 1987 ( Der Schatz des Priamos , Volume 121) and 2002 ( Wind des Vergessens , Volume 297) 13 such time travel stories were published in the German LTB. With the book series LTB History, the publisher published six books on the subject of history in 2014.

In addition, the Funny Paperback repeatedly takes up environmental issues such as in the stories of Uncle Scrooge's floating refinery (Volume 86), Adventures in the Rainforest (Volume 155) and The Egyptian Vulture Strikes (Volume 164). In addition to endangered animal species ( The last Gulu-Gulu in Volume 79), mass tourism ( The floating fields in Volume 83 or The wonderful holiday world in Volume 171) is also discussed .

Special mention should be made of the many series such as Mickey Kid, Mauser Chroniken, Mickey's World History, Mickey's Art History, Commissioner de Mauss and many others, which were only partially published in the German-speaking area for decades.

layout

First editions

The concept of the Funny Paperback has changed occasionally over time. Up to volume 76, the LTB was held together by a framework that consisted of a previous and several transitional stories. After a brief revival in LTB 79, the prehistory disappeared, and from volume 83 onwards, the interim history as well (see above). The previous and intermediate stories, which were almost always implemented by Giuseppe Perego , were often of below-average drawing and narrative quality. The framework story was then only used sporadically, e.g. B. Volume 97 Olympisches Allerlei or Volume 167 The Seven Wonders of the World . Volume 352 and Volume 353 also contained a framework story that even extended across both volumes. In Volume 390 and Volume 455, which celebrate Donald Duck's 75th and 80th birthday, the individual stories (internal plot) are linked by a framework plot in which Donald Duck talks about those stories.

Up to volume 106, the volumes were sorted by figure; it contained either only Duck or only Mouse stories. Exceptions are the volumes 8, 13, 18, 66 and 97 ( Donald does not give up , Mickey in danger , Donald is unbeatable , Donald goes crazy and all sorts of Olympics ), which not only contains both mouse and duck stories, but even the framework plot is contested by members of both clans. The separation was probably due to the fact that the Ducks live in a different city than Mickey Mouse and Goofy in most languages, unlike in German-speaking countries. " Duckburg " includes (Paperopoli or Italian and Topolinia) as in the original English Duckburg and Mouseton, like many other cities in films like Darkwing Duck were used, etc.. From volume 106, the distribution between mouse and duck stories was about the same. In the course of time, particularly between issues 200 and 250, this changed and a dominance of the Duck stories became apparent; there was only one mouse story in a row, rarely two.

Up to volume 118, for reasons of cost (apart from two test editions in Berlin and Munich ) , the books had alternately two pages in full color and two pages in black and white, and relatively coarse-grained paper was used (see above). There were no specially designed anniversary volumes. Since volume 119, the LTB have been produced completely in color and with a book spine motif that extends over the volumes for at least one year. Occasionally editions with glossy covers were published, for the first time with volume 150 and since then at least for every 50th volume, but also with round "birthdays" of the main characters or the funny paperback itself. For a long time the glossy cover remained the only form of special design. It is only since numbers over 300 that you can find particularly elaborate bindings, even in issues that were not published for a specific anniversary. For example, volumes 321 and 343 have embossed reliefs on the upper cover of the book, the upper side of volume 336 is sprinkled with glittering "sand", and volume 351 is covered with velvet paper designed to look like a soccer field on the occasion of the 2006 World Cup ; the watch on the cover of volume 360 glows in the dark and the LTBs 372, 398 and 424 were delivered with a 3D cover. There was also a hologram on the cover of LTB 385 and a broken design on LTB 388.

New editions

The Egmont Ehapa Verlag published reprints of the first edition very early on. These later editions correspond to the original in terms of content and differ only in the fact that the price imprinted on the front is adapted to the current price of the LTB and the fact that the list of the LTB published so far was updated at the end of the book until the first edition was valid.

The new editions from the late 1980s onwards differed from the previous editions in that all pages were now printed in color (the originals and reprints of the second edition up to LTB 118 were alternately black / white and color). Here, too, at the end of the book, the list of previously published LTBs was updated up to the current edition of the first edition and the price was adjusted.

With the new edition of the funny paperbacks in 1997, Egmont Ehapa Verlag also brought out the older LTBs in a new look. The individual volumes received new titles, cover pictures and a book spine motif, as was customary from LTB 119 of the first edition. In some cases, parts of the text were rewritten or stories were renamed. The revision mainly affects those passages that from today's point of view could appear to be harmful to young people, such as the “wanting to trim” tick, trick and track by an angry Donald or the shooting at a competing apple stall with artillery guns. Furthermore, individual words that were perceived as out of date have been replaced by more recent ones. There were few problems with the tobacco consumption of certain characters in the early LTB stories. Almost all people with negative connotations (e.g. Karlo the hangover, mostly a big cigar) and strongly bizarre characters smoked, so that smoking could not be glorified.

The first ten volumes were reissued in 2017 on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of LTB in the so-called LTB Nostalgia Edition , which was limited to 5000 pieces and provided with a certificate. These came in a collection drawer and, like the originals, were printed in color with the old cover, the old prices and only every second double page. There was also books 1–10 in the retro edition, which had the original cover image but the new logo with the note "50 years", like books 489–501, which were published in 2017. These were very similar to the new editions at the end of the 80s. They were available individually in stores and in the Egmont shop.

Collectors Edition

Since 2015, special “ Collectors Edition ” editions have been published occasionally for the Funny Pocket Books . These are limited to 1,500 items (issues 1–3) and 1,000 items (issues 4–7) and are significantly more expensive than a regular LTB. In addition to a unique storage box that has different color embossing, the buyer also receives a certificate with the signature of a draftsman. Seven Collectors Editions have been published so far: LTB No. 464 “The Hunt for the Falcon” in gray by Kari Korhonen, LTB No. 475 “Dangerous Galaxies” in yellow by Giorgio Cavazzano, LTB No. 478 “Worldwide in action” in blue by Andrea Freccero, LTB No. 487 “Finally rich?” In red by Alessio Coppola and LTB No. 491 “The Treasure Island” in brown by Stefano Turconi. LTB 499 "The Columbus Butterfly Returns!" By Andrea Freccero in blue as well as LTB 1 "The Columbus Butterfly" and most recently from November 7, 2017 LTB 500. From April 24, 2018 with crime scene Duckburg (volume 506). From November 6, 2018, issue no. 8 will appear in red with the signature of Andrea Castellan, who is also known under the artist name "Casty". Edition 9 will be published on June 18, 2019 and contains versions of volumes 520 and 521 with Andrea Freccero as an illustrator. Collectors Edition 10 was released on November 5, 2019 with Flemming Andersen as artist. For the anniversary there was a book for the 500th edition of the Funny Paperback, which was only available in the pop-up store in Berlin. This made it an object of speculation.

The titles are inconsistent: sometimes there is a single title for a special edition, sometimes each volume has its own, and sometimes there is no title at all. The volumes here do not only contain comics with Mickey Mouse, because each volume is dedicated to a different main character (Donald Duck, Scrooge McDuck, Tick, Trick and Track Duck , Mickey Mouse).

  • LTB English Edition : In July and September 2009 the first two volumes of the LTB English Edition were published . Within this series, stories that have already been published are printed in English. The text is not the original English text of the respective stories. Rather, the respective text has been adapted for a German-speaking readership for educational reasons. The series is designed for a younger readership; The aim is to combine learning with fun. In an editorial section at the end of the book, the characters are presented with their original English names, as well as a short translation of the most important vocabulary. What is striking about this series is that only stories with D-Code (comics from Egmont Verlag) are printed and Italian comics are completely dispensed with. From 2009 to 2012 this book was published once in July and September. There have been no new releases in this series since 2015. This was followed by the Mickey Mouse English Edition , which was discontinued in 2016.

Others

Parallel to the LTB, a 100-page comic series was published from 1974 to 1998 with the Donald Duck paperback . Since 2010, the tradition of the hundred pagers has been continued with the Donald Duck & Co. series . In addition, the 100-page Panzerknacker & Co. (1986–1987), Onkel Dagobert Taschenbuch (1987–1993), Ein Fall für Micky (1994–1995), Adventure Team (1996–1998) and Fähnlein Fieselschweif (1997–1998) were published ). In addition, from 1998 to 1999, Donald Comics & More, a follow-up series to the Donald Duck paperback , was published, which was slightly larger in format and number of pages and also contained an editorial section . A Mickey Mouse paperback has been published in parallel since 2016 .

Programming due to the corona pandemic

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the associated shutdown , many comic publishers and dealers were on the verge of existential threats. Egmont Ehapa Media GmbH was also forced to change its program. Since the 2020 European Football Championship is expected to be postponed to 2021, the publication of LTB Extras 6 has also been postponed from 2020 to expected to be 2021. The cover of LTB 533 was also changed from a football motif to a Phantomias cover at short notice, the story compilation was retained and so football stories are still in the edition. The hardcover association "NullNull Duck - No Time To Duck" was released on the occasion of the Bond film James Bond 007: No Time to Die , but the start was postponed to the end of 2020 and thus differs considerably from the book release.

To do this, the publisher has created a new series of “LTB Balconies” that only consists of reprints. In addition to the series already announced, the novel series “LTB Lesespaß” was also introduced.
