history

Look inside the collection, antique portraits

The foundation of the collection was laid in the first half of the 18th century when the first antique objects came to the university . In 1734, Johann Friedrich Christ , who was a professor of poetry, was already using the exhibits in his lectures. From the early 19th century, the Antikensammlung was named a cabinet for archeology and art. While the basic holdings of the collection initially consisted mainly of ancient coins , gems and plaster casts , this changed when, through the mediation of Eduard Gerhard, 50 Greek and Etruscan vases came to Leipzig. In the same year, the collection was supplemented by antiques from the WG Becker collection, which Becker had bought on a trip to Italy. In the years that followed, the collection was significantly expanded with numerous additions of clay lamps , terracottas and other sculptures. In the second half of the 19th century, new acquisitions were mainly limited to plaster casts. This began under Johannes Overbeck . It was not until 1897 that the Friedrich Hauser Collection , which contained important antique exhibits, was purchased again on a larger scale. In the first decade of the 20th century under the direction of Franz Studniczka , the collection grew again by around 300 valuable exhibits donated by the Americans Edward Perry Warren and John Marshall , including an important marble head of Alexander the Great .

Today's collection

In total, the collection now includes more than 16,000 exhibits, the most important of which include numerous black and red-figure vases . Since 1844, the collection has not been limited to being a study collection for students, but has also shown excellent exhibits from its holdings to the general public. Since 1994 the collection has been presented in the Alte Nikolaischule in Leipzig . It owes its re-establishment to the special commitment of Eberhard Paul . Conductor of the respective professor of classical archeology at the University of Leipzig have been until 2017, currently it is provisionally Ulrich Veit .

The citizens have been involved since 1840 and are also sponsoring this collection to this day . This makes it one of the oldest academic teaching and display collections of Greek and Roman art at German universities. It is the only such facility in Saxony .

Institutionally, the museum and thus its sponsoring group are linked to the Institute for Classical Archeology at the History Department of the University of Leipzig. This took place in 2017 when Hans-Ulrich Cain retired and the Institute for Classical Archeology had lost its institutional independence and was subordinate to the Department of History. Ulrich Veit has been acting director of the museum since then. The custodian of the Antikenmuseum has been Hans-Peter Müller (archaeologist) since it was re -established .
