Friedrich Hauser (archaeologist)
Friedrich Hauser (* 1859 in Stuttgart ; † February 20, 1917 in Baden-Baden ) was a German classical archaeologist .
Life
Friedrich Hauser studied classical archeology at the University of Strasbourg and was at Adolf Michaelis with the dissertation The newly-Attic reliefs PhD (printed Stuttgart 1889). For the year 1890/1891 he received a travel grant from the German Archaeological Institute . Hauser spent the rest of his life as a private scholar in Rome. In 1903 the Austrian Archaeological Institute elected him a real member abroad. After the outbreak of World War I , shortly before Italy entered the war, he fled to his homeland at Christmas 1914 and died there a few years later in the spa town of Baden-Baden.
Hauser's research into ancient sculpture and vase painting meant great advances in archeology in the 20th century. His biographer Werner Fuchs writes about his publications: "Even where he is wrong, his error is often more revealing than some correct claims of others" .
