The 1989/90 season was the second regular season of the East Coast Hockey League (ECHL). The eight teams played 60 games each in the regular season . The ECHL only played in one division last time. The team with the highest points in the regular season were the Winston-Salem Thunderbirds , while the Greensboro Monarchs won the Riley Cup for the first time in the play-offs .

Team changes

The following changes were made before the start of the season:

The Carolina Thunderbirds changed their name to Winston-Salem Thunderbirds.
In the course of a league expansion, the Greensboro Monarchs were added.
As part of a league expansion, the Hampton Roads Admirals were added.
As part of a league expansion, the Nashville Knights were added.
