John H. Oakley

John Howard Oakley (* 1949 ) is an American classical archaeologist .

Life

John H. Oakley studied at Rutgers University , where he graduated with a bachelor's degree in ancient history with honors, and in 1976 he completed his master's degree in ancient history . He then worked at the American School of Classical Studies at Athens until 1979 and as a staff member at Rutgers University. In January 1980 he received his PhD in Classical Archeology from Rutgers University. Oakley has taught at the College of William and Mary since 1980 . First he was an assistant professor until 1986, then an associate professor until 1993. He has been a full professor since 1993. Guest professorships took him to the American School of Classical Studies at Athens in 1986, 1997/98 and 2005 to 2008, to the University of Canterbury in 1997, to Princeton University in 2000/01 and to the Albert Ludwigs University of Freiburg in 2003 .

Oakley is considered to be one of the foremost experts in the field of Greek vase painting . His research on the Achilles and Phiale painter workshops is of particular importance . Oakley has been on the editorial board of the Corpus Vasorum Antiquorum USA since 1985 , wrote for the Perseus Project and coordinated the work on the red-figure vase painters in the creation of the New Pauly . He participated in the planning and creation of several exhibitions, including "Pandora. Women in Classical Greece ”(Baltimore, Dallas, Basel 1990 to 1995) and“ Coming of Age in Ancient Greece ”(Hanover, New York, Cincinnati 2003). He was also responsible for the three conferences on Greek vase painting "Athenian Potters and Painters" (Athens 1994, Athens 2007, Williamsburg 2012).
