The Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences ( Azerbaijani Azərbaycan Milli Elmlər Akademiyası [AMEA]; English Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences [ANAS]; Russian Национальная академия наук Азербайджана [НАНА]) is the national Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Azerbaijan . In 2001 it was promoted to the National Academy of Sciences and thus to the highest scientific organization in Azerbaijan.

history

precursor

The National Academy of Sciences has its roots in the “Azerbaijani Society for Scientific Research and Studies” founded in Baku in 1923 on the initiative of Nəriman Nərimanov . In 1925 the scientific society was placed under state control and in 1929 it was reorganized as the "Azerbaijan State Research Institute". In 1932 the institute was appointed to the Azerbaijani branch of the Transcaucasian Department of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR and Ruhulla Axundov was appointed director. In 1935 the branch was raised to an independent organization within the Academy of Sciences of the USSR and the sections and commissions that had existed up to that point were raised to research institutes. Ivan Gubkin was elected chairman of the presidium, followed by Sergei Namjotkin .

Foundation and Soviet times

On January 23, 1945, by decree of the Council of People's Commissars of the Soviet Union, the Azerbaijani branch was transformed into the Academy of Sciences of the AsSSR. The first eleven full members were the composer and musicologist uzeyir hajibeyov , the poet Samad Vurgun , the writer Mirzə Ibrahimov , the chemist Yusif Məmmədəliyev , geologists Mirəli Qaşqay , Şamil Əzizbəyov and Ələşrəf Əlizadə , the surgeon Mustafa Topçubaşov , the botanist Aleksandr Qrossheym that Architects Sadıq Dadaşov and Mikayıl Hüseynov , the physicist İosif Yesman , the philosopher Heydər Hüseynov and the pathologist İvan Şirokoqorov . At the first general meeting on March 31, 1945 Mirəsədulla Mirqasımov was elected President of the Academy. Later presidents of the academy during the Soviet era were Yusif Məmmədəliyev (1947–1950, 1958–1961), Musa Əliyev (1950–1958), Zahid Xəlilov (1961–1967), Rüstəm İsmayılov (1967–1970), Həsən Abdullayev (1970–1983 ) and Eldar Salayev (1983-1997).

Republic of Azerbaijan

After the independence of Azerbaijan, the academy continued its work. On May 15, 2001, the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Heydər Əliyev elevated the Academy to the National Academy of Sciences and thus the highest scientific organization in the country. In 2004 the Academy was commissioned to publish the Azerbaijani National Encyclopedia ( Azərbaycan Milli Ensiklopediyası ) as the successor to the Azerbaijani Soviet Encyclopedia ( Азәрбајҹан Совет Енсиклопепетет Енсиклопепепетет Енсиклопепепетет Енсиклопепедиклопепепеть . The academy's presidents during this period were Eldar Salayev (1983–1997), Fəraməz Maqsudov (1997–2000) and Mahmud Kərimov (2001–2013); Akif Əlizadə has been President of the Academy since 2013 .

Structure and organization

General meeting

The supreme body of the National Academy of Sciences of Azerbaijan is the General Assembly, which takes place at least once a year. The General Assembly determines the size of the Presidium and elects the members of the Presidium every five years, including the President of the National Academy of Sciences. It is also responsible for the election of the real and corresponding members, the appointment of honorary members and the election of external members.

The Presidium of the National Academy of Sciences of Azerbaijan is responsible for the administration of the Academy. In the last election in June 2018, Akif Əlizadə was confirmed as President of the Academy. Furthermore, the vice-presidents İsa Həbibbəyli , Tofiq Nağıyev , İbrahim Quliyev and Dilqəm Tağıyev were re-elected and the academy members Bilal Bilalov , Nərgiz Paşayeva and İradə Hüseynova were re-elected as vice-presidents for five years. Rasim Əliquliyev was elected as the Academy's academic secretary .

Members

The academy consists of real and corresponding members elected by secret ballot, as well as honorary members and external members. The real members of the Academy are elected from among the corresponding members.

The National Academy of Sciences also includes the research center “Azerbaijan National Encyclopedia”, the Central Scientific Library, the Museum of Natural History, the special design office “Cybernetics”, the Elm Publishing House and the Coordinating Council for Scientific Research of the Republic of Azerbaijan.

There has been a branch in Naxçıvan since 2002 and a branch in Gəncə since 2012 .
