The Institute for Manuscripts of Azerbaijan ( Azerbaijani Əlyazmalar İnstitutu ) is an institute of the National Academy of Sciences of Azerbaijan . It examines medieval manuscripts that are saved, archived, translated and published. Exhibitions of writings are also put together. The institute is located in Baku in the building of a former Russian school for Muslim girls that Zeynalabdin Taghiyev founded.

history

The first plans for the establishment of the institute were made in 1924, when a congress in Baku decided to set up a scientific library with a department for medieval manuscripts and rare books. The library was originally an institute of the Azerbaijan Research Union, but was later incorporated into the Nezāmi Literature Institute . In 1950 a foundation for manuscripts was established in the National Academy of Sciences, which in 1986 formed the basis for the establishment of the institute. Between 1972 and 1980 the Soviet Iranist Rustam Aliyev was director of the institute.

In 1996 the institute was named after Muhammad Fuzūlīl .

Duration

The institute has over 11,000 manuscripts in Turkish , Persian and Arabic, among others . Subjects of the writings include medicine, astronomy, mathematics, poetry, philosophy, law, history and geography.
