Dieter Ohly

Dieter Ohly (born October 6, 1911 in Berlin , † June 19, 1979 in Munich ) was a German classical archaeologist and museum director.

Life

The son of a businessman was active in 1938 in the Samos excavation and the establishment of the museums in Vathy and Tigani. In 1939 he received his doctorate from the University of Munich with a thesis on early clay figures from the Heraion in Samos .

After the Second World War, he made a living by rebuilding the Glyptothek and the Ziebland 's exhibition building on Königsplatz in Munich and setting up and exhibiting in the rebuilt museum buildings.

In 1952 his habilitation took place with the thesis Greek gold sheets of the 8th century. v. In 1953 he took over the management of the Athens headquarters of the German Archaeological Institute as second director. From 1956 to 1961 he directed the German excavations in Kerameikos in Athens, with the establishment of the museum and the gardens. From 1962 to 1978 he directed the Glyptothek and Antikensammlungen in Munich and the excavation in the sanctuary of Aphaia on Aegina (Greece). Ohly was also instrumental in the restoration of the gable figures of the Temple of Aphaia at Aegina in the Glyptothek.

Ohly was married to his colleague Martha Dumm , who continued his work since his death.
