Michael Maass

Michael Maaß (born March 17, 1942 in Heidelberg ) is a German classical archaeologist .

Michael Maaß received his doctorate from Heidelberg University in 1968 . Between 1970 and 1974 he worked on the excavation of the German Archaeological Institute in ancient Olympia . He then worked as a curator at the Staatliche Antikensammlungen Munich . In 1983 he became chief curator, in 2001 chief curator at the antiquities collection of the Badisches Landesmuseum in Karlsruhe . In 1985 he completed his habilitation at the University of Würzburg and teaches as an honorary professor at the University of Heidelberg. In 2007 he retired.

Michael Maaß is married to the archaeologist Gerta Maaß-Lindemann. Together with the designer Kurt Ranger, Ranger Design, he designed the presentation of the antiquities in Karlsruhe Palace (1995 and 1998). He was curator of the exhibitions “Delphi: Oracle at the Navel of the World” (1996), “In the Labyrinth of Minos - Crete the first European high culture” (2001) and “Hannibal ad portas - Power and Wealth of Carthage” (2004). In 1979 he became a corresponding member of the German Archaeological Institute.
