Joan Hernández Pijuan

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Joan Hernández Pijuan (born February 15, 1931 in Barcelona , † December 28, 2005 there ) was a Spanish painter.

Life

From 1945 to 1947 Pijuan was a student at the Llotja Art School in Barcelona, from 1952 to 1956 he was a student at the Reial Acadèmia Catalana de Belles Arts de Sant Jordi in Barcelona, where he also held a professorship from 1976.

He is one of the most important contemporary Spanish painters. He has always resisted assignments to certain directions and schools. Although his works show a high degree of abstraction, he has always refused to be classified as an abstract painter: "I always start from reality."

This reality was primarily the barren landscape of Catalonia . By simplifying and concentrating, Pijuan transformed them into striking surfaces, which he structured with carefully placed lines and points.

The artist was also a teacher: in 1989 he received the Chair of Painting at the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Barcelona , which he held until his death. In 1992 he became dean of the faculty.

In 2005 he was an honorary participant in the 51st Venice Biennale .

Quote

"I always try to paint as if I didn't know anything about painting, as if every picture was my first."
