The Reial Acadèmia Catalana de Belles Arts de Sant Jordi ( catal .; Often simply referred to as La Llotja after its place of residence ) is the Royal Catalan Academy of Fine Arts Saint George, founded in 1775 and based in Barcelona ( Catalonia ).
The art school, originally known as the “(fee) -free school for design” ( Escola Gratuïta de Disseny ), which soon taught sculpture and architecture in addition to painting, was founded by the Catalan Trade Council. From 1849 the Barcelona Art School officially belonged to the Acadèmies Provincilas de Belles Arts of Spain and obtained its independence in 1900. Today the academy, whose courses now also include music and other arts, is divided into the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Barcelona and the Escola Superior de Disseny i d'Art Llotja School of Arts and Crafts . In 1930 it lost its character as a provincial academy in Spain and from then on sees itself as a Catalan art academy. The academy is located locally in the neoclassical building of the Llotja of Barcelona . For this reason it is often called simply “La Llotja” in the vernacular.
