Theodor Panofka
Theodor Sigismund Panofka (born February 25, 1800 in Breslau , † June 20, 1858 in Berlin ) was a German archaeologist, historian and philologist.
life and work
Panofka studied philology at the Berlin University from 1819 to 1823. In Rome he belonged with Otto Magnus von Stackelberg , Eduard Gerhard and August Kestner in Rome to the circle of the Roman Hyperboreans . In 1826 he met the French diplomat and collector Pierre-Louis de Blacas d'Aulps , in whose service he was from then until the July Revolution as a consultant and private scholar, both in Naples and in Paris. Together they were among the founders of the “Instituto di corrispondenza archeologica”, later the German Archaeological Institute , in which Blacas was appointed first president and Panofka foreign secretary in Paris.
At the National Archaeological Museum in Naples , where he worked with Eduard Gerhard, Panofka dealt with the cataloging of antique vases . In 1836 he became an assistant at the Royal Museum in Berlin, and in 1844 professor of archeology at Berlin University . From 1856 he was the curator of the Royal Vase Collection in Berlin.
In 1836 he was accepted as a full member of the Prussian Academy of Sciences .
Theodor Panofka died in Berlin in 1858 at the age of 58 and was buried in the St. Matthew Cemetery in Schöneberg . The grave has not been preserved.
