Life
Hans Dragendorff was the son of the pharmacist Georg Dragendorff and studied in Dorpat, Berlin and finally in Bonn with Georg Loeschcke , where he received his doctorate in 1894 with a dissertation on Terra Sigillata ("De vasculis Romanorum rubris capita selecta"). This work was printed in German in 1896 in the Bonn yearbooks and is still relevant for the naming and classification of Roman terra sigillata.
After receiving the travel grant from the German Archaeological Institute in 1896, Dragendorff became Associate Professor for Classical Archeology in Basel in 1898 . The German Archaeological Institute appointed him a full member on Winckelmannstag 1901. In 1902 he became director of the Roman-Germanic Commission in Frankfurt. From 1911 to 1922 he was Secretary General of the German Archaeological Institute. From 1914 he was a member of the Prussian Academy of Sciences . In 1922 he received a call to Freiburg i. Br. , Where he taught as a full professor of classical archeology until his retirement in 1938. From 1933 he was an extraordinary member of the Heidelberg Academy of Sciences . After the outbreak of war in 1939, he again took over the management of the Roman-Germanic Commission in Frankfurt.
The archivist Ernst Dragendorff was his older brother and the anatomist Otto Dragendorff his younger brother. The historian Klaus Conrad was a grandson of Hans Dragendorff.
