Wolf Koenigs

Wolf Koenigs (born March 10, 1942 in Ranis ) is a German building researcher and monument conservator .

After graduating from the Birklehof boarding school , Koenigs studied architecture and classical archeology in Munich and Berlin . In 1971/72 he held the travel grant of the German Archaeological Institute . He received his doctorate in 1972 at the Technical University of Munich under Gottfried Gruben with the dissertation An archaic rotunda in the Kerameikos in Athens .

After various activities for the German Archaeological Institute in Athens and Istanbul , he worked from 1982 to 1989 at the Bavarian State Office for the Preservation of Monuments as a practical preservationist in Munich. From 1989 to 1994 Koenigs was the first director of the Istanbul Department of the German Archaeological Institute . In 1994 he was appointed professor for building research and building history at the architecture faculty of the Technical University of Munich . He has been retired since 2007. Koenigs is a full member of the German Archaeological Institute and until 2010 was a member of the Central Directorate as a representative of building research.

His main research interests are Greek sacred architecture and questions of monument preservation in Bavaria. For many years he researched the Temple of Athena in Priene in particular .

Wolf Koenigs is the brother of the Green politician Tom Koenigs . He is married to the classical archaeologist Hanna Koenigs-Philipp , the couple has a son.
