From 1935 to 1937 he received a travel grant from the German Archaeological Institute and became Armin von Gerkan's assistant at Olympia . It was here that he met the excavation photographer Irene Mavrogordato and was a scientific consultant at the Istanbul Department of the German Archaeological Institute until 1945 .

In 1948 he completed his habilitation with a thesis on The Roman Agora of Smyrna and its buildings at the Technical University of Hanover , where he was initially a private lecturer, in 1949 a lecturer and in 1953 an extraordinary professor for building history. The handbook Architecture Minor Asia from its beginnings to the end of the Hittite period , published in 1955, comprised the knowledge gained from working with Friedrich Karl Dörner , Max von Oppenheim and Kurt Bittel .

From 1961 to 1975 Naumann was director of the Istanbul department of the DAI. He also taught at the University of Istanbul , established the Ankara branch of the DAI , which has since been abandoned, and dealt with central fire sanctuaries in Iran for further exploration of the greater Asia Minor area .
