Wolfgang Müller-Wiener

Wolfgang Müller-Wiener (born May 17, 1923 in Friedrichswerth (Thuringia), † March 25, 1991 in Istanbul ) was a German building researcher .

After an apprenticeship as a carpenter, he studied architecture at the Technical University of Karlsruhe from 1948 to 1951 and received his doctorate in 1954 on the development of industrial construction in Baden . From 1962 to 1967 he was the second director of the German Archaeological Institute in Cairo and during this time led the excavations at Abu Mena near Alexandria . After his habilitation in 1965 at the Technical University of Karlsruhe, he became a full professor for building history at the Technical University of Darmstadt in 1967 . In 1976 he was elected the first director of the German Archaeological Institute, Istanbul Department . From 1974 until his retirement in 1988 he led the excavation in Miletus , where he himself examined three Hellenistic temples and Heroa with Berthold Weber and the early Christian buildings. The guest track of the DAI Istanbul Wolfgang-Müller-Wiener-Kolleg was named in his honor .
