Legend
The most important landmark for seafaring in the area (Gulf of Salerno, Gulf of Policastro) is the rocky nose of Capo di Palinuro protruding into the sea. Virgil's description in Book 5 of the Aeneid shows that this has been the case for a long time : When Aeneas got into distress and finally spotted the rocky nose of the coast, his helmsman, Palinuro , fell asleep and fell into the sea. His further fate is described in the 6th book: Palinuro drifted across the sea for three days on the oar that was carried along and ended up stranded on the coast of Lucania. As soon as he thought he had been saved, he was killed by the residents of the area. Then the rock was given its name.
