The place is on the Tyrrhenian Sea , the zip code is 84059 and the area code is (+39) 0974. The demonym for the inhabitants is Marinai .

history

Marina di Camerota (or Camerota Alta, on top of the mountain ) was a place where people emigrated to Venezuela in the 19th century. The connection to the South American country is still strong, the main street is still called Via Bolivar today. The larger houses in Marina were built by the returnees from Venezuela, whose descendants still own a large part of the land. The "Venezuelans" mainly settled in the west of the municipality, the eastern part (old Castello and Palazzo dei Marchesi) was reserved for the (lower) nobility. Despite the tourist boom since the 1960s, which actually only affects the many camping villages between Marina and Palinuro, the place has retained the character of a quiet fishing village outside the summer months.

geography

The place is about 200 km south of Naples and 90 km from Salerno on the fortieth parallel. The coast in this area is very varied. Marina di Camerota is a popular seaside resort for those seeking relaxation from all over Italy and the tourist center of the Italian region of Campania . Since 1991 the place is part of the national park Cilento and Vallo di Diano and member of the Costiera Cilentana .

traffic

There are hourly bus connections to the Pisciotta - Palinuro train station . The port is used by fishermen and tourists and has a gas station and limited maintenance and repair options. There is a coast guard base. In the summer months, local travel agencies offer inexpensive direct shuttle buses to Naples Airport . Expressway 18 can be reached in around 20 minutes and offers a very good connection to the A3 motorway ( Battipaglia connection ).

Economy and nature

The main livelihoods of the inhabitants are tourism, wine and olive growing in the hinterland and fishing. The village received the Blue Flag every year from 2003 to 2007 for its bathing water quality. The sophisticated Camerota as well as Palinuro received the award for best water quality again in 2013. Naturism is allowed by the municipal authorities on the beach "del Troncone". Many fishermen offer their services as "charter captains" in the summer months and bring tourists to the surrounding bays of the national park. There are numerous opportunities to explore nature from here. The best season for hiking is between April and June and September.

The most important festival in the city is the Festa di San Domenico , it takes place every year on August 4th. As usual in Italy, the area is visited by an above-average number of tourists from August 1st to 15th. The reason for this is also the traditional Ferragosto . There are many cultural events during this time.

Infrastructure

As is common in large parts of Italy, the place does not yet have a sewage treatment plant. A current EU project can help. The same applies to waste disposal, but "waste separation" has been introduced in Marina di Camerota in particular. So far there have been various illegal landfills, e.g. B. in the Vallone delle Fornaci, where waste is dumped without a permit (outside the national park). These examples testified to the originality, but also to the backwardness of the region. For about three years there has been a central garbage collection point with 15 employees who are responsible for separation and disposal. Thus, noticeable improvements were introduced by the municipality.
