Myrmecophilus is the most species-rich genus from the family of the ant crickets (Myrmecophilidae). Together with the genera Myrmophilellus , Camponophilus , Eremogryllodes and Microbothriophylax, it forms the subfamily of the Myrmecophilinae. Species of the genus occur almost worldwide, which indicates an ancient origin of the genus.

features

Myrmecophilus species reach a maximum length of 4.7 millimeters, with the males being slightly smaller and slimmer than the females. Their body is oval and wingless. The eyes are very small, the antennae thick and only about as long as the body. The pronotum is large, across and narrower in front than behind. The femora of the hind legs are noticeably thick. The cerci are long. The Ovipositor has a membrane-like attachment on the back of the base.

Way of life

Most species live in ant nests, some also in termite nests. They only lay a few eggs, which can be up to a third the size of the adult animal. The ant cricket ( Myrmecophilus acervorum ) found in Central Europe probably reproduces exclusively parthenogenetically.

species

There are currently 58 species recognized in four subgenera:
