Georg Wolfgang Franz Panzer (botanist)

Georg Wolfgang Franz Panzer (born May 31, 1755 in Etzelwang ; † June 28, 1829 in Hersbruck ) was a German doctor , botanist and entomologist . Its official botanical author's abbreviation is “ Panz. "

Life

Georg Wolfgang Franz Panzer is the son of the German bibliographer Georg Wolfgang Panzer . He practiced as a doctor in Hersbruck and Nuremberg. In addition, he was a botanist and had a herbarium rich in species.

In 1786 Panzer was accepted into the Academy of Non-Profit Science in Erfurt and in 1789 into the Leopoldina . He was a corresponding member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences . From 1806 he was a full member of the Imperial Moscow Society of Naturalists .

In 1792 Panzer's entomological work Faunae Insectorum Germanicae initia was published , for which he used 100 hand-colored copper plates that were made between 1791 and 1792 by the engraver Jacob Sturm . In the following 20 years 109 parts of the Faunae Insectorum with 2,640 plates by Jacob Sturm appeared.

Dedication names

The plant genera Panzeria J.F.Gmel are named after Panzer . from the family of the nightshade family (Solanaceae) and Panzerina Soják of the family Labiatae (Lamiaceae).
