Johann Georg Volkamer the Elder (also: Volcamer , Volckamer , Volkammer ; born June 9, 1616 in Nuremberg ; † May 17, 1693 ibid) was a German doctor, natural scientist and writer.

Life

From 1633 Johann Georg Volkamer, the son of Johann Volkamer from Lobenstein , studied philosophy and mathematics at the University of Jena . Three years later he moved to the University of Altdorf and took medicine there. From 1638 to 1641 he studied at the University of Padua . In 1643 Volkamer received his doctorate in Altdorf with the dissertation De febre ephemera . He then went to France and Italy for some time . After his return he became a member of the Collegium Medicum in Nuremberg . There he was also elected dean a few times. He was in correspondence with the Danzig physician Johannes Schmiedt and the Italian anatomist and surgeon Marco Aurelio Severino .

Under the company name Helianthus , Volkamer was accepted into the Pegnese Flower Order in 1646 as the eleventh member . Although he was only active in literature there for a short time, he maintained a long friendship with the second order president, Sigmund von Birken . As a scientist, he was one of the co-founders of the Societas Medica in Nuremberg. On November 1, 1678 , the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina accepted him as a member. Here, too, Volkamer chose Helianthus I as the company name . In 1683, Johann Michael Fehr appointed him the first Director of the Ephemeris of the Leopoldina. In this function, Volkamer was in charge of the publication of the scientific journal “ Miscellanea curiosa sive Ephemeridum medico-physicarum ”, which had been printed by the Nuremberg bookseller Wolfgang Moritz Endter (1653–1723) since 1683 . In 1686, the Leopoldina Presidium elected him President. Also in 1686 Volkamer was appointed imperial personal physician. He was also appointed court advisor.

In his scientific research Volkamer dealt specifically with mechanics and optics . He also translated several scientific works into German and Latin.

Johann Georg Volkamer died on May 17, 1693 in Nuremberg at the age of 77. The doctor and botanist Johann Volkamer was his son, as was the businessman, manufacturer and botanist Johann Christoph Volkamer .
