Johann Volkamer

Johann Georg Volkamer the Younger (* May 7, 1662 in Nuremberg ; † June 8, 1744 ibid) was a German medic and botanist .

Life

Johann Georg Volkamer (also: Volcamer , Volckamer , Volkammer ) was the son of the doctor Johann Georg Volkamer . After attending the Latin school in Nuremberg and taking lessons from his father, Volkamer studied medicine at the universities of Jena and Altdorf near Nuremberg . 1684 he completed his studies in Altdorf and was with his dissertation De lethargo to Dr. med. PhD.

At the age of 23 he was accepted by the Collegium medicum in Nuremberg. Volkamer thus effectively became his father's successor. In 1685 Volkamer was accepted as a full member of the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina .

In 1686 he was appointed prosector for anatomical demonstrations.

Johann Georg Volkamer died on June 8, 1744 in Nuremberg at the age of 82.

Honors

In his honor, Carl von Linné named the genus Volkameria of the mint family of plants (Lamiaceae).
