In ancient times, a thesaurus or treasure house was a building in a sanctuary used to store precious votive offerings . It was often shaped like an ante temple . The ancient temples often also functioned as commercial banks .

Famous for their treasure houses are Delphi , where the reconstructed treasure house of the Athenians can be seen, and Olympia with the treasure house of the Sikyonians . Because of the earthquake and other damage, only foundations and rubble can be seen here, but the Museum of Olympia shows the reconstruction of the treasure house terrace by Wilhelm Dörpfeld .

Etymological influence
