Uta Hassler

Uta Hassler (* 1950 ) is a German architect, building researcher and monument theorist.

Life

She studied architecture at the Technical University of Munich and the University of Karlsruhe (TH) , where she received her doctorate in 1982 at the Institute for Building History with a thesis on the building policy of Cardinal Damian Hugo von Schönborn. There she was a research assistant (1981-1984). During her career as an architect in the State Building Administration of Baden-Württemberg (1984–1991), she graduated from the Baden-Württemberg Management Academy and worked in private practice.

From 1991 to 2005 she was professor for building research , monument preservation and design at the Technical University of Dortmund . From 2005 until her retirement in 2015, she was professor and head of the Institute for Monument Preservation and Building Research (IDB) at ETH Zurich . Since 2016 she has been working at the Department of Architecture at ETH Zurich and at the Technical University of Munich. In 2017 she received an honorary doctorate (Dr. hc) from the Technical University of Braunschweig and an honorary professorship (TUM Distinguished Affiliated Professor) from the Technical University of Munich. Her main research interests are topics related to the history of architecture and science from the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries, topics relating to the dynamics of existing buildings and the aging and mortality of buildings and structures.
