Excenevex is a French commune in the department of Haute-Savoie in the region of Auvergne Rhône-Alpes .
geography
Excenevex is located at 385 m , ten kilometers west of the city of Thonon-les-Bains (as the crow flies). The village extends on the south bank of Lake Geneva , on the Golfe de Coudrée, on the east side of the Presqu'île du Léman, a wide peninsula that protrudes far into Lake Geneva.
The area of the 6.66 km² municipal area includes a section on the south bank of Lake Geneva, the lakeshore line is approximately 2.8 km. The community area extends from the flat lakeshore southwest over a gently sloping slope to the plateau of the Presqu'île du Léman. The vast forest area of Grand Bois is located here . The highest point is reached at 450 m at the height of Chevilly. The southern border runs along the Vion , a short tributary of Lake Geneva.
The hamlet of Chevilly ( 435 m on the Presqu'île plateau) belongs to Excenevex . Neighboring municipalities of Excenevex are Yvoire and Messery in the west and Massongy and Sciez in the south.
history
The area around Excenevex was inhabited very early. The oldest traces come from a coastal settlement from the Neolithic . There was also a settlement here during the Burgundian period .
Excenevex was first mentioned in a document in the 14th century. The parish used to be called Exchenevay . The place name is made up of the components ex (from) and chenevay , an old French expression for the hemp plant (Latin cannabis ).
Attractions
The village church was built in the 19th century. Furthermore, ruins of the Château de Rovorée have been preserved, as well as three other castles.

With 1104 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017), Excenevex is one of the small communities in the Haute-Savoie department. In the last few decades the population has grown rapidly. There are various second homes outside the village near the lake shore.
Economy and Infrastructure
Until well into the 20th century, Excenevex was predominantly an agricultural village. Today there are various local small businesses. Many people in employment are commuters who work in the surrounding larger towns.
The place has a small port and is connected to the other Seeanstößer communities by passenger shipping. In the summer months, the wide sandy beach with leisure facilities is a popular destination for day tourists. Excenevex is off the major thoroughfares but is easy to get to from Sciez . Further road connections exist with Yvoire and Messery.
