The city is known for the so-called "Villas mexicaines". Many emigrants from Barcelonnette and the surrounding area sought economic success in Mexico in the 19th century . Towards the end of the century, they made up the largest subgroup of the Mexican-French. Their social togetherness was known; this is one of the reasons why many became rich. After returning to Barcelonnette, they built magnificent villas there and in other communities in the Ubaye Valley.
economy
The economy is mainly shaped by smaller companies. A large number depend on tourism. As for the property market, the total number of accommodations was 3,160 in 2007, with almost 39% used as primary residence by owners. To the east you reach the Col de la Bonette (2802 m) and the Col de Larche (Italian: Colle della Maddalena ). In the north is the Col de Vars .
The planned railway line to Chorges was built between 1909 and 1935, but was never completed.
