Fernando Quevedo (* 1956 in Costa Rica ) is a Guatemalan theoretical physicist who studies elementary particle physics and cosmology .

Quevedo went to school in Guatemala and received his PhD in theoretical physics with Steven Weinberg at the University of Texas at Austin in 1986 . As a post-doctoral student he was at CERN , at McGill University until 1988 and at Los Alamos National Laboratory from 1989 to 1991 .

Quevedo was from 1991 to 1995 at the University of Neuchâtel and briefly at the National Autonomous University of Mexico in 1997/98 , before becoming a Research Fellow in 1998, University Lecturer in 2000 , Reader in 2001 and Professor in 2003 at Cambridge University and a Fellow of Gonville and Caius College . In 2009 he also became director of the International Center for Theoretical Physics (ICTP) in Trieste .

He is mainly concerned with string theory phenomenology (and its generalizations in branes) and physics beyond the standard model as well as with applications in cosmology ( bran cosmology ).

He was a Guggenheim Fellow and received the ICTP Prize in High Energy Physics in 1998. He has two honorary doctorates in Guatemala ( Universidad de San Carlos de Guatemala , Universidad del Valle de Guatemala ).
