Andrew 'Andy' Hampsten (born April 7, 1962 in Columbus , Ohio ) is a retired American cyclist . His greatest achievement was winning the Giro d'Italia in 1988 .

Cycling career

Hampsten achieved his first major international success at the Giro d'Italia in 1985 , which he competed as a member of the US cycling team 7 Eleven . He won the mountain finish of the 20th stage and was 20th overall. In 1986 he drove for the French team La Vie Claire and was fourth overall in the Tour de France as an assistant to team captains Bernard Hinault and Greg LeMond , who finished first and second, and won the white jersey . His greatest success was winning the Giro d'Italia in 1988 , after he secured the lead in the overall standings on the toughest stage over the Gavia Pass in a snow storm and sub-zero temperatures. In 1989 he was third. At the Tour de France 1992 he was able to repeat his fourth place from 1986 and won the mountain finish to Alpe d'Huez . He also won the Tour de Suisse in 1986 and 1987 and the Tour de Romandie in 1992.

Work and private life

Hampsten grew up as the son of two English professors at the University of Grand Forks , North Dakota . He is married and has a daughter. Today he lives in Tuscany, where he organizes the Cinghiale Cycling Tours . He and his brother Steve run a bicycle company in Seattle .
