L'Isle-d'Abeau is a French municipality with 16,124 inhabitants (as of January 1 2017) in the department of Isère in the region Auvergne Rhône-Alpes ; administratively it belongs to the arrondissement La Tour-du-Pin and is the main town ( chef-lieu ) of the canton L'Isle-d'Abeau . In the 1970s, the originally small community was expanded together with Villefontaine and other communities into a Ville nouvelle , so that the number of inhabitants multiplied. The inhabitants are called Lilôts , Lilôtes , Lillots or Lillotes .

The community is located about 30 kilometers east-southeast of Lyon . It is bounded to the north by the municipality of Saint-Marcel-Bel-Accueil , to the east and south-east by Bourgoin-Jallieu , to the south by Saint-Alban-de-Roche and Four , to the west by Vaulx-Milieu and to the north-west by Frontonas .

Until the 1970s, L'Isle-d'Abeau was a small village with no more than 900 inhabitants. After the founding of the ville nouvelle , the population increased rapidly, exceeded 5,000 in 1990 and has stagnated at around 15,500 since the mid-2000s, with an upward trend.

The A43 autoroute and the former National Route 6 run through the municipality . L'Isle-d'Abeau train station is on the Lyon – Marseille railway line .
