Crémieu is a small town with 3282 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Isère in the region Auvergne Rhône-Alpes and is located about 40 km east of Lyon .

Medieval houses

The special importance of this city is based on the numerous, partly very old houses, which have been restored in many places with great attention to detail in recent years. Various construction techniques or architectural details can be studied on many facades. Numerous extensive explanatory boards are very helpful in this, in French, English and German, pointing out facts that one would not notice when passing by.

The history of Crémieu begins in the 12th century with the settlement of Benedictines on the rock of St. Hippolyte in the east of the city. In 1315 the city was given a charter. The result was economic prosperity for two centuries. A 2 km long city wall with 9 gates and 14 towers is being built. In 1357 a mint was established. Under Louis XII. (1498–1515) the city became a center of the grain trade because of its strategic location on the way to Savoy . In the 17th century the economic importance declined. Several monasteries are built. In the 18th century leather and fabric production became dominant, but after that the town became insignificant.

The covered market and the old town on the hill

The highlight of Crémieu is a very large market hall from the 15th century with a massive roof made of flat natural stones, which is still used for the market today. To the east, on the hill of St. Hippolyte, behind the clock tower, there is an extensive and well-prepared ruined city.

Crémieu is still not a tourist destination, but rather tranquil and quiet. Crémieu is a good stopover on the way to the south of France or as a location to explore the surrounding area, e.g. B. the stalactite caves Grottes des Balmes or the medieval church in Saint-Chef.

Partnerships

Crémieu maintains partnership relationships with the German municipality of Hüttenberg.
