Merlas is about 70 kilometers southeast of Lyon . Merlas is surrounded by the neighboring communities of Saint-Bueil in the north, Miribel-les-Échelles in the east, Saint-Aupre in the south, Saint-Nicolas-de-Macherin in the southwest and Massieu and Saint-Geoire-en-Valdaine in the west.
