Villemoirieu is located in the arrondissement of La Tour-du-Pin and in the canton of Morestel (until 2015: canton Crémieu ). The inhabitants are called Balmolans .

La Balme-les-Grottes is surrounded by the neighboring communities of Lagnieu in the north and north-west, Vertrieu in the north and north-east, Parmilieu in the east, Saint-Baudille-de-la-Tour in the south, Hières-sur-Amby in the south and south-west and Saint -Vulbas in the west and south-west.
