geography

Masevaux is located in the south-eastern Vosges . The valley of the Doller widens here before entering the lowlands of the Upper Rhine Plain. The area bordering the Bourgogne-Franche-Comté region to the south -west is part of the Ballons des Vosges Regional Nature Park .

history

The place has its origin in the Abbey Masmünster (Masevaux) that around the year 720/730 by a etichonids was founded called Maso. Maso owned the nearby Ringelstein Castle . After his son and only heir drowned in the Doller at the age of eight, Maso is said to have founded the Masmünster convent. This monastery achieved the establishment of its own domain. Later the monastery and power fell into the Landsässigkeit Austria. A settlement developed around the monastery, which was elevated to a town in 1217. The monastery was abandoned at the end of the 14th century. At the end of the 16th century the rule came to the noble lords of Bollweiler , and in 1616 as an Austrian fiefdom to the Counts of Fugger ( Fugger von der Lilie ). The Masmünster dominion comprised the entire Dollertal above Masmünster as well as the places Sentheim, Lauw (Au), Guewenheim, Bourbach-le-Haut and Bourbach-le-Bas. In 1648 all Austrian rights fell to the Kingdom of France.
