Böcklin von Böcklinsau , also Boecklin von Boecklinsau or often just Böcklin , is the name of an old Alsatian noble family . The family originally belonged to the patriciate of the free imperial city of Strasbourg .

history

The sex was related to the tribe and coat of arms of the Bock family, who also came from Strasbourg and belonged to the patriciate of the city. This appeared for the first time around the year 1200 and over the course of time took on various surnames after their possessions, including Bock von Bläsheim and Bock von Bockstein. It went out with the death of Baron Friedrich Heinrich Bock von Gerstheim in 1791 and with his youngest daughter in 1792.

The Böcklin appear for the first time in a document in 1266 with Ulrich Boecklin , who also begins the trunk series . Until 1781 they are often referred to as Strasbourg councilors . The office of "Stettmeister", the name for the mayor of Strasbourg, was held 109 times by 13 members of the family from the middle of the 15th century to the middle of the 18th century.

As early as the 13th century, but especially during the 14th century, members of the family were able to acquire significant property. In 1442 the rule of Rust in the Ortenau came into family ownership and became the family seat for a long time. At the same time, they obtained the knighthood several times , as they were more and more often active in the state administration. In 1513 the family was given the name “Boeckhle von Boeckhkelsau” and other lordly privileges through an imperial diploma . In 1773 the barons were in France by Louis XVI. accepted.

Because of the ownership or partial ownership of Allmannsweier , Kehl-Dorf , Rust and Wittenweier (today part of Schwanau ), Messrs Böcklin von Böcklinsau were members of the knighthood of the Ortenau district of the knight canton Neckar in the Swabian knight circle in the 18th century . Because of the ownership or partial ownership of Bischheim (acquired in 1411), Obenheim and Wibolsheim, they were also enrolled in the knightly district of Lower Alsace and from 1645 to 1685 because of Helfenberg in the knightly canton of Kocher .

Of the three main lines, the two oldest expired in the 18th century. The youngest line, completely resident in the margraviate of Baden since the end of the 18th century , remained in the possession of Rust Castle .
