Franz Friedrich Siegmund August Böcklin von Böcklinsau (born September 28, 1745 in Strasbourg , † January 3, 1813 in Ettenheim ) was a German naturalist, author, music writer and composer.

Life

Franz Friedrich came from the Alsatian noble family Böcklin von Böcklinsau . He was the son of Franz Jacob Christian Böcklin von Böcklinsau (1704–1762) and his wife Charlotte, nee Freiin von Dungern (1723–1778).

After his school education he studied from March 3, 1762 (matriculation 5106) at the University of Strasbourg and then worked at the police court and in the school commission and from 1771 to 1781 in the council of the city of Strasbourg.

When he came of age in 1770, he took over the family estates and from this time on he lived in Rust im Breisgau for a while.

In 1772 he was awarded the unpaid honorary title of Chamberlain in Württemberg. From 1781 to 1793 he was temporarily in the military and diplomatic services of Prince Friedrich August von Anhalt-Zerbst in Amsterdam and Vienna and, after his death in 1793, the rule of Jever was passed on to his sister Catherine the Great because of its status as a kunkellehen and under Russian rule came in 1793/94 as a Russian colonel in Jever.

After lengthy inheritance disputes, he lost the entire family property in Alsace in 1790 to his half-brother Franz Joseph von Mundolsheim (1756–1844), who was an illegitimate child of his mother, and from this time had to limit himself to the property on the right bank of the Rhine.

Böcklin von Böcklinsau was a member of several scientific societies and has written several papers on scientific topics. In addition, he was the author of a drama and a comedy, a writer and a music lover who composed several songs, musical plays and instrumental pieces.

On February 20, 1775 he was given the academic surname "Diophanes" under the matriculation number. In 804 he was accepted as a member of the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina .

In 1777 he became an extraordinary member of the Society of Friends of Natural Sciences in Berlin .

He was a Brandenburg-Ansbach Privy Councilor and a Knight of the Red Eagle Order .

On September 23, 1809, he was at the University of Erlangen for Dr. phil. PhD .

Böcklin married Caroline Freiin Roeder von Diersburg (1743-1820) on August 31, 1765 . The marriage, which was divorced on February 20, 1781, had eleven children, including the later Baden Major General Friedrich Böcklin von Böcklinsau (1767-1829).
