Julius Manigold
Julius Manigold (born November 23, 1873 in Masmünster ; † January 20, 1935 in Würzburg ) was a German composer and flute virtuoso .
Life
Manigold was born in Masmünster in Alsace in 1873 and received his first music lessons from his father at an early age. In 1888 he entered the Strasbourg Conservatory and from 1890 worked there in the city orchestra. In 1892 he took his first position as first flutist and soloist in the Bad Kissingen spa orchestra . This was followed by engagements in Majorenhof (Latvia), Davos , Interlaken , Gera as 1st solo flutist 1894–96 and Zurich . In 1896 Manigold received the position of 1st flutist in the ducal court orchestra in Meiningen , and in 1908 the title of ducal chamber virtuoso . In 1901 Manigold was awarded the Golden Medal of Merit for Art and Science there. From 1902–09 he took part in the Bayreuth Festival , in 1903, 1906 and 1909 at the Lower Rhine Music Festival in Aachen, and was considered one of the best flute virtuosos of that time. In 1910 he was obliged to attend the Royal Music School (now the University of Music in Würzburg ), where he taught the subjects of flute and piano.
As a composer he emerged with pieces for flute and piano, which enjoyed general popularity. His Flute Concerto op. 6 is remarkable, a highly romantic concert that does justice to the technical and sonic possibilities of the flute.
