Rodolfo Neri Vela (born February 19, 1952 in Chilpancingo , Mexico ) is the first and so far only Mexican spaceman .

The Italian -spanischsstämmige Neri Vela studied at the National University of Mexico , mechanical engineering and electrical engineering and acquired in 1975 the Bachelor diploma. The following year the University of Essex awarded him a master's degree in telecommunications. He then did research in the field of electromagnetic radiation and received a doctorate from the University of Birmingham in 1979 .

Neri Vela was a payload specialist and as such took part in the space shuttle mission STS-61-B on the space shuttle Atlantis in 1985.
