Ilan Volkov

Ilan Volkov ( Hebrew אילן וולקוב; born September 8, 1976 in Tel Aviv , Israel ) is an Israeli conductor .

Life

The son of concert pianist Alexander Volkov and historian Shulamit Volkov received violin training as a child and then studied violin with Chaim Taub , the director of the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra , piano with his father and composition with Abel Ehrlich . From 1991 to 1993 he studied conducting with Mendi Rodan at the Rubin Academy of Music in Jerusalem and then attended the Royal Academy of Music in London. Ilan Volkov is married to the Israeli pianist, singer and composer Maya Dunietz .

In 1995 he became Young Conductor in Association of the Northern Sinfonia , 1997 Chief Conductor of the London Philharmonic Youth Orchestra . In 1999, Seiji Ozawa appointed him his assistant with the Boston Symphony Orchestra .

In 2003 he succeeded Osmo Vänskä as the youngest chief conductor of the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra in its history. In 2004 he was named Young Musician of the Year by the Royal Philharmonic Society .

In addition to this activity, Volkov also appeared as a guest conductor a. a. with the Cleveland Orchestra , the Danish National Symphony Orchestra , the Orchester Philharmonique de Radio France and the National Symphony Orchestra Washington . He worked with soloists such as Daniel Barenboim , Mstislaw Rostropowitsch , Emanuel Ax , Viktoria Mullova , Heinrich Schiff , Thomas Zehetmair , Christian Tetzlaff and Stephen Kovacevich .

Volkov conducted Tchaikovsky's Eugen Onegin in San Francisco in 2004 , and Britten's A Midsummeright's Dream at the Glyndebourne Festival Opera in 2006 . In Tel Aviv he is involved in the Levontin 7 project, which is dedicated to combining classical music with jazz, rock and electronic music.

From 2011 to 2014 he was music director and chief conductor of the Icelandic Symphony Orchestra .
