history

Argiésans is first mentioned in a document in 1024. It was the main town of the Bas-Rosemont dairy, which belonged to the Rosemont domain. Initially under the influence of the lords of Montbéliard, Argiésans came under the sovereignty of the Habsburgs in the mid-14th century. Together with the Sundgau , the village came to the French crown with the Peace of Westphalia in 1648. Since 1793 Argiésans belonged to the department of Haut-Rhin , but remained in 1871 as part of the Territoire de Belfort in contrast to the rest of Alsace with France. Since 2000, Argiésans was initially part of the Communauté d'Agglomération Belfortaine , which was merged into the Communauté d'agglomération Grand Belfort in 2017 .

With 461 inhabitants (January 1, 2017) Argiésans is one of the small communities in the Territoire de Belfort department. After the population in the first half of the 20th century had always been in the range between 110 and 150 people, a strong population growth has been recorded since the beginning of the 1970s. Since then, the population has quadrupled.

Economy and Infrastructure

Argiésans was a village dominated by agriculture (arable farming, fruit growing and cattle breeding) well into the 20th century. Since the mid-1980s, Bavilliers, a larger commercial and industrial zone, has developed on the municipal boundary. Various construction companies, cleaning offices and an agrochemical laboratory have settled here. There are also some local small businesses in the old town center. In the meantime, the village has also turned into a residential community. Many workers are therefore commuters who work in the other municipalities of the agglomerations of Belfort and Montbéliard .

The village is well developed in terms of traffic. It is on the main road N83, which leads from Belfort to Héricourt . The closest connection to the A36 motorway is around five kilometers away. Further road connections exist with Banvillars and Urcerey. Argiésans is connected to the city of Belfort by a bus line.
