Mastera

The Mastera in front of Rotterdam

The tanker Mastera and the sister ship Tempera are two-way tankers and icebreakers . You have full for both directions of the navigation bridge . It is driven by a propeller pod drive (Azipod). The Mastera was put into service in January 2003.

Ice-breaking tankers are not new, but like all ice-breaking ships, they have to contend with their behavior in open waters. An icebreaker bow is bad when going through waves.

In these two-way ships, a compromise has been found between traditional hull shape and icebreaker. The bulbous bow ensures good driving behavior in the open sea, the stern, built in the form of an icebreaker bow, enables ice breaking when reversing. To do this, the ship turns 180 degrees and is pulled by its pod drive .

The ships were built in Japan by Sumitomo Heavy Industries at the Yokosuka shipyard in Oppama and operate for the Fortum Shipping Company in Finland .
