Châtenois-les-Forges (German earlier Kestenholz ) is a French commune in the department Territoire de Belfort in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté . It is the capital of the canton of Châtenois-les-Forges in the Arrondissement of Belfort .

geography

Châtenois-les-Forges is 335 m above sea level, about halfway between the cities of Belfort and Montbéliard , nine kilometers south of Belfort (as the crow flies). The village extends in the northern section of the basin of Montbéliard, on the western edge of the wide valley plain of the Savoureuse opposite Trévenans, at the eastern foot of the heights of the Bois de Châtenois.

The area of the 8.67 km² municipal area includes a section of the gently undulating landscape in the area of the Burgundian Gate (Trouée de Belfort). The eastern border runs along the Savoureuse, which flows with several turns through an approximately one kilometer wide valley floor to the south and provides drainage to the Allan . From the course of the river, the municipal area extends westward to the Châtenois plateau, which is an average of 370 m and consists mainly of arable and meadow land. It rises to the north to the height of the Bois d'Oye , where the highest point of Châtenois is reached at 415 m. In the west, the plateau is bounded by a dry valley running in a north-south direction . Further to the west, the municipality extends into the extensive forest of the Bois de Châtenois , which is subdivided by various hollows and knolls (up to 405 m).

Neighboring municipalities of Châtenois-les-Forges are Bermont in the north, Trévenans in the east, Nommay and Grand-Charmont in the south and Bethoncourt and Brevilliers in the west.

history

Châtenois is first mentioned in 1147 under the Latinized name Casteneyaco . At that time there was an Augustinian priory, which was under the priory of Lanthenans and in 1435 became dependent on the Montbéliard chapter. Initially under the influence of the lords of Montbéliard, Châtenois came under the sovereignty of the Habsburgs in the mid-14th century. It formed the center of a dairy farm. The priory was abandoned at the end of the 16th century. Together with the Sundgau , Châtenois came to the French crown with the Peace of Westphalia in 1648.

Since 1793 the village has belonged to the Haut-Rhin department , but in 1871 it remained as part of the Territoire de Belfort, unlike the rest of Alsace, in France. In the course of the 18th century, the iron processing industry developed with several blast furnaces in which the iron ore from the area was refined. The works were owned by the Mazarins of Belfort. With the opening of the tram from Montbéliard to Belfort in 1913, Châtenois was connected to the public transport network. However, operations on the line were given up again in 1940. To avoid confusion with other communities of the same name, Châtenois was officially renamed Châtenois-les-Forges in 1933. Since 2005, Châtenois-les-Forges was initially part of the Communauté d'Agglomération Belfortaine , which was merged into the Communauté d'agglomération Grand Belfort in 2017 .

population

With 2750 inhabitants (January 1, 2017), Châtenois-les-Forges is one of the medium-sized municipalities in the Territoire de Belfort. After the population in the first half of the 20th century had always been in the range between 1,800 and 2,200 people, there was significant population growth from 1950 to 1970. The provisional high was reached at the end of the 1970s with around 2,700 inhabitants. The economic crisis and the restructuring of the industry in the Pays de Montbéliard from 1985 to 1990 resulted in many workers and families moving away. As a result, a population decline of 7% was recorded by 1990. Since then there has been another increase in population. Today the settlement area of Châtenois-les-Forges has grown together almost seamlessly with that of Trévenans.
