The Marienthal Bridge is a historic road bridge in the Gotha district and in Erfurt .

location

The bridge is located in Flur Ingersleben and in the Erfurt district of Molsdorf and spans the Apfelstädt just before it flows into the Gera . The structure is located directly on the K 26 district road, from which the special case of the road construction load of the city of Erfurt is derived. At the bridge there is also the junction of the municipal road to Molsdorf from the state road 2154, which connects Erfurt-Bischleben and Ingersleben.

history

Marienthal Bridge from the North (2010)
Emergency protection with bitumen covering (2011)

At the instigation of Count Gustav Adolf von Gotter , who owned the Molsdorf Castle , a natural stone arch bridge was built from 1751 to 1752 at the site of a ford through the Apfelstädt . The road from Gotha to Erfurt and the road from Arnstadt via Molsdorf met at the bridge . The planning of the baroque bridge came from the Thuringian master builder Gottfried Heinrich Krohne , the stonemason Johann Sebastian Ritter from Seebergen carried out the work. The Reichsgraf, Duke Friedrich III of Gotha, took over the financing of the construction costs of 1,300 Reichstalers . as well as the city of Arnstadt.

In 1896, as part of the regulation of the Apfelstädt, the bridge was lengthened with a second smaller bridge arch in order to enlarge the passage area.

When Molsdorf Castle opened as a museum in 1965, a replacement bridge was built next to the old bridge, which fell into disrepair in the following years. In place of the responsible road construction company in the Erfurt district, the Kulturbund local group Ingersleben began in 1982 with the first safety and maintenance work, with parts of the parapets being restored. At the end of the GDR era, the bridge, designated as a cultural monument , was in a dilapidated state. In 1991, extensive repairs and restoration of the monument began, which has now been reduced to its use as a pedestrian bridge. A path obelisk formerly located on the bridge was replaced by a replica and the bridge renovation in 1995 was considered complete.

In the following years, the structure inspection revealed that the necessary drainage of the bridge was insufficient. In autumn 2010 the limestone pavement was removed as an "emergency safeguard" and a bituminous covering was applied in order to minimize the unhindered access of surface water into the structure. The paving stones were stored in the road depot of the city of Erfurt until they were to be reinstalled.

Building

Building data

The natural stone arch bridge has a main arch with a clear width of 11.2 meters, the secondary arch has a width of 5.2 meters and is used to relieve flooding. The masonry of the arches and wing walls as well as the bridge deck is made of limestone that was mined nearby. The parapet is made of Seeberger sandstone . On the upstream side it is adorned with the coat of arms of the Count von Gotter, on the downstream side it bears the Latin inscription: Built and maintained for public convenience - Gustav Adolf v. Gods -1752 .

Emergency backup

At the end of 2010, the city of Erfurt had the limestone pavement that characterizes the bridge removed and replaced with a bituminous pavement that was contrary to style. This is justified as an emergency safeguard against the unhindered access of surface water into the structure with a destructive effect also with regard to its statics. The limestone pavement had been stored for later reinstallation.
