Center of Magny-Vernois

Magny-Vernois is a commune in the French department of Haute-Saône in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .

geography

Magny-Vernois is located at an altitude of 289 m above sea level, two kilometers southwest of Lure and about 24 kilometers east-northeast of the city of Vesoul (as the crow flies). The village is located in the eastern part of the department, on the Lure plain, on the eastern bank of the Reigne river.

The area of the 6.38 km² large municipal area includes a section of the plain of Lure. The alluvial plain on the edge of the Vosges is an average of 285 m. It is traversed by the rivers of the Ognon and the Reigne, which flow with several turns through a formerly marshy area to the south. The plain is partly used for agriculture, partly with forest. There are fish ponds in several places.

The eastern boundary runs along the Ognon. From the course of the river, the municipal area extends westward over the Magny plain and the Reigne lowland to the adjacent Grand Bois plateau , which is bordered by two side streams of the Reigne, the Picot to the north and the Razou to the south . At 312 m, the highest point of Magny-Vernois is reached on this plateau.

Neighboring municipalities of Magny-Vernois are Lure in the north and east, Vouhenans and Vy-lès-Lure in the south and Amblans-et-Velotte and Bouhans-lès-Lure in the west.

history

The origin of the Magny-Vernois settlement was formed by a grangie that was dependent on the Lure monastery. A mill on the Reigne also belonged to it, which was renovated in the 18th century and still exists today. In the Middle Ages, the village belonged to the Free County of Burgundy and in that part of the Bailliage d'Amont . The village is mentioned in 1505 under the name Magny vernay , in 1748 as Magny Vernoy .

During the Thirty Years War, Magny-Vernois was destroyed by Swedish troops in 1636. Together with Franche-Comté , the place finally came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678. A blast furnace , founded in 1659, was important for the economic life of the village in the 18th century; in the 19th century it was replaced by a foundry. In 1780, a large part of the village was destroyed by fire. Today Magny-Vernois is a member of the community association Communauté de communes du Pays de Lure, which comprises 22 localities .

Attractions

The Saint-Desle church was built in the 19th century. It houses a statue of Saint Desle (17th century) and paintings by the Savoy painter Gamon-Dupasquier (19th century). Three stone wayside crosses date from the 16th and 18th centuries. Also worth seeing is the former mill of the abbots of Lure an der Reigne, built in the 18th century.

After the population in the first half of the 20th century had always been in the range between 500 and 630 people, there has been a significant increase in population since the beginning of the 1960s. Since then the population has almost doubled. The settlement area of Magny-Vernois has now merged with that of Lure.

Economy and Infrastructure

For a long time Magny-Vernois was predominantly a village characterized by agriculture (arable farming, fruit growing and cattle breeding), forestry and fish farming. The hydropower of the rivers was previously used to operate mills. In addition, a brick factory and a foundry played an important role in the economic life of the village.

In the meantime, Magny-Vernois has developed into an industrial and commercial location in the Lure agglomeration. The two companies Faurecia of the PSA group (automotive industry) and Vétoquinol (veterinary medicine) combine more than 1000 jobs. There are also various local small businesses. Magny-Vernois is therefore a commuter community.

The village is located off the main thoroughfares near a department road that leads from Lure to Villersexel . There are other road connections with Vouhenans and Amblans-et-Velotte. The railway line from Lure to Villersexel ran through the area and will be reactivated when the Rhin-Rhône TGV line is being built.
