Frédéric-Fontaine is located at an altitude of 390 m above sea level, five kilometers south of Ronchamp and about 18 kilometers west of the city of Belfort (as the crow flies). The village extends in the eastern part of the department, in a panoramic position in a cleared island on the western roof of the Chérimont , above the plain of Lure.

The area of the 3.48 km² municipality covers a section in the undulating landscape of the southwestern foothills of the Vosges . The central part of the area is occupied by a slope gently sloping to the west, which is mainly used for agriculture. It is drained to the Clairegoutte by the Dorfbach, which is dammed up into fish ponds in several places. To the east, the municipality extends into the wooded area in the area of the valley cut of the Ruisseau des Battants , which belongs to the catchment area of the Rognon . At 498 m, the highest point of Frédéric-Fontaine is reached on the southern slope of the Chérimont. In geological and tectonic terms, the terrain consists of red sandstone from the Lower Triassic . In the valley of the Ruisseau des Battants, Permian strata also emerge.

Neighboring communities of Frédéric-Fontaine are Clairegoutte in the north and east, Lomont in the south and Magny-Jobert in the west.

history

Remains of a Gallo-Roman traffic route and other finds from Celtic times indicate an early settlement of the area. Frédéric-Fontaine was founded on July 16, 1588 by Friedrich I. von Württemberg , Count of Montbéliard, for Protestant refugees from Lorraine, Champagne and the Burgundian Franche-Comté. At that time the place figured under the name Friderichsbron . During the Thirty Years' War the village was devastated by soldiers from Lorraine in 1633. In the 18th century, members of the Anabaptist movement settled in Frédéric-Fontaine . With the occupation of the county of Württemberg-Mömpelgard (Montbéliard) , the village finally came into French hands in 1793. Today, Frédéric-Fontaine is a member of the community association Communauté de communes Rahin et Cherimont, which comprises nine localities .

With 258 inhabitants (January 1, 2017), Frédéric-Fontaine is one of the small communities in the Haute-Saône department. After the population had decreased significantly in the first half of the 20th century (408 people were still counted in 1886), a slight population growth has been recorded again since the beginning of the 1970s.

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Frédéric-Fontaine was mainly a village characterized by agriculture (arable farming, fruit growing and cattle breeding) and forestry. Today there are some local small businesses. In the last few decades the village has transformed into a residential community. Many workers are therefore commuters who go to work in the larger towns in the area and in the Belfort-Montbéliard agglomeration.

The village is well developed in terms of traffic. It is located near the D438 departmental road, which leads from Lure to Montbéliard and which has been developed into a four-lane expressway in this area. Further road connections exist with Ronchamp and Andornay.
